Will any of these releases have a surprise new vocalist? Only time will tell!

Asinhell

Impii Hora (Metal Blade Records)

Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen doing death metal with Marc Grewe (Insidious Disease, Ex-Morgoth) and Morten Toft Hansen (Raunchy) is something we didn’t know could be a thing until a couple months ago, but here we are. Judging by the singles they dropped prior to today’s release, this one’s got a chance to be a total surprise to some of you guys.

Code Orange

The Above (Blue Grape Music/Code Orange LLC)

Just when you thought you understood what Code Orange had to offer, they decided to flip the script completely on its head with The Above. While it’s still got its heavy “I’m going to punch a hole in this wall” moments, the parts that really shine in my opinion are the tracks that sort of channel that weird 90s grunge angst, especially when Reba Meyers gets to flex her talents as a vocalist.

Harm’s Way

Common Suffering (Metal Blade Records)

If you’re looking for a record to kick start your cage fighting career, look no further. After listening to a bit of this one, it’s the audio equivalent of a balled fist ready to strike. Having gotten to listen to this one a couple times already, I feel like I could bench press an additional 15 pounds.

Yes, that means I’d be benching 25 pounds… shut up.

KK’s Priest

The Sinner Rides Again (Napalm Records)

Say what you will about there being a second Priest out there in the world, but you can’t deny the combination of K.K. Downing and Tim “Ripper” Owens. Traditional heavy metal fans are going to get a huge kick out of this one, as the sophomore studio effort by KK’s Priest traffics in that classic sound while still feeling like it’s from the 2020s.

Seven)Suns

One Of Us Is The Killer (Silent Pendulum Records)

It’s been more than 10 years since The Dillinger Escape Plan dropped what I personally think is a 10/10 album in their repertoire, One Of Us Is The Killer. Every track kicks ass, but what if it was re-arranged as a classical composition for violin, viola, and cello? Well, then you’d get Seven)Suns’ release today. It’s ambitious, but it’s got Ben Weinman’s blessing, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
