Every band out there’s got their own set of influences, from old school metal giants to major acts that might fall just outside of their primary genre. Music means something different to different people, so it’s always fun when we get to find out about a band’s influences. Earlier today, we got the first glimpse into Dimmu Borgir’s influences with the announcement of their upcoming cover album Inspiratio Profanus and its first single, Venom’s “Black Metal.”

Set for release on December 8 via Nuclear Blast, this collection of influential songs is the first of its kind for Dimmu Borgir. Looking toward the new release, Silenoz said the cover album was a long time coming.

“We’re pleased to announce the Inspiratio Profanus release! We thought it was about time to finally compile the cover songs we’ve done over the years and give these renditions an updated mastering, all in one package, highlighting some of our many influences!”

A quick glimpse at the album’s tracklist shows a pretty diverse set of songs ranging from the aforementioned Venom to Bathory, Twisted Sister, and Deep Purple. As for the band’s rendition of “Black Metal,” Silenoz said Dimmu Borgir did everything they could to do the song justice.

“‘Black Metal’, the track, and its origin, features something really primeval, raw and unhinged. There is lawlessness and danger connected to it. We did our best to capture the spirit of the ancient gods’ rock ’n roll 24 years later. Did we do it justice? I think so.”

Inspiratio Profanus will release on December 8 via Nuclear Blast Records, but you can preorder your copy today.
