Kamelot, Mentalist Members Launch New Rock and Metal Streaming Service

Ever feel like you just absolutely need one more streaming service to add to your long list of subscriptions? If the answer is yes and you want to make sure your subscription money was used to support artists you actually care about, then a new music streaming service/app called ROKK could be the solution.

Founded by Kamelot/Cyhra drummer Alex Landenburg and Mentalist Guitarist Peter Moog, the new platform has a crowdfunding campaign going on right now with plans to launch first in Europe and the U.K. in January 2024. Landenburg said this new platform will pay rock and metal artists significantly more than Spotify or any of the other major platforms can offer simply by focusing on one genre, rather than all of them.

“The money of the rock and metal fans does not really go to the bands that they listen to, it goes somewhere else most of the time. We want to change that with ROKK.”

According to information provided by the team behind ROKK, artists on the platform could expect to receive a steady monthly income and enjoy direct artist support. They’ll do that by offering more money per stream, since subscribers’ dollars won’t be crossfinanced into mainstream artists that get way more streams on a service like Spotify or Pandora. As such, the platform expects to provide “up to 10% of the monthly ROKK subscription fee from every single one of your fans for as long as they subscribe to ROKK.”

Fans would subscribe directly through an artists’ exclusive affiliate link in order to make sure that percentage of the subscription fee goes to them. Current estimates state that artists could expect “roughly $1 per fan per month” from Europe and North American fans — meaning if 1,000 fans sign up through a band’s link, they could expect $1,000 per month.

That kind of money, Moog said, would be a huge boon to the bands we actually like.

“Metalheads, united we can make a difference. Please join the ROKK revolution to make streaming fair for bands and artists.”

Along with the music, the platform will apparently have an extensive online encyclopedia about rock and metal music, high quality audio, and curated playlists.

As of right now, the IndieGoGo campaign for ROKK is seeking a flexible goal of $10,949 with 53 days left to achieve that amount. Through the campaign, users can pre-subscribe to either their three-month tier at $11 (which is normally $36) and a year subscription for $108 (instead of the normal $145).
