We’ve only got a few weeks left of 2023. As the year slows to a crawl, here are some new releases to keep shit interesting.

Sh*t That Comes Out Today – December 1, 2023

Cobra Spell

666 (Napalm Records)

Sometimes you just need some good ol’ fashioned 80s sleazy glam metal and Cobra Spell are here to fuck you up with their take on it. With this being their debut album, this at times sounds like it would fit perfectly on the Sunset Strip. It’s got songs about the devil, fucking, and fighting, so you know it’s a good time.

Full Of Hell And Nothing

When No Birds Sang (Closed Casket Activities)

Big and ethereal, this collaboration between grindcore outfit Full of Hell and shoegaze-y act Nothing goes places. It’s big and heavy, yet it doesn’t really get bogged down all that much. And for every silent, almost contemplative moment present on this release, you’ve got something barreling down at you like a freight train loaded for bear.

Helfró

Tálgröf (Season Of Mist)

In our review of the latest release from Icelandic blackened death duo Helfró, C.C. Delorean said the album is “a high octane, extremely entertaining album which does a great job of capturing the harsh beauty of the Icelandic landscape in sonic form.” He also went on to say it’s “both striking and vivid.” That should be enough reason to check it out.

Panopticon

The Rime Of Memory (Bindrune)

Okay, so technically this came out on Tuesday, November 29, but fuck it. Austin Lunn, the mastermind behind Panopticon, really outdid himself with this new one. It’s such an introspective piece of art that honestly, it sort of belies its black metal ties. It’s dark, it’s vast, it’s folksy, and honestly it’s a standout of the year.

Paradise Lost

Icon 30 (Paradise Lost)

Originally released 30 years ago, Paradise Lost’s Icon is considered by many to be a shining moment in the British gothic metal band’s career. Composed by Gregor Mackintosh with lyrics penned by Nick Holmes, this one is absolutely epic. Icon 30 is a re-recording of that album, so if you’re a fan of the original, this one’s sure to please.
