Tzompantli Share New “Tlayohualli” from Forthcoming Record

Proud Mexican death metal band Tzompantli just shared a new single from their forthcoming album, The Drums Of Ancestral Force, out May 17 via 20 Buck Spin.

The track, “Tlayohualli,” can be streamed below. Tzompantli includes Brian “Itztlakamayeh” Ortiz of Xibabla and speaks from a proud historical perspective. Ortiz opens up about the themes on the song and the story it tells

“The single ‘Tlayohualli’ is Nahuatl, meaning ‘Darkness Of The Night,’” Ortiz says about the song. “It’s about La Noche Triste (the night of sorrows), where the Mexica fought off and removed the Spanish and their Indigenous allies from Tenochtitlan.

“It describes the battle and triumph of the night but also the aftermath and confusion of becoming sick from being exposed to illnesses that the Mexica had no tolerance or immunity to, which would lead to their downfall. I chose this song because it has everything you could want from a death doom song: it’s strong, powerful, dramatic, and laments in a way that should move you.”

Tzompantli aren’t a band to shy away from tough topics or shredding riffs, and they prove that even more on this latest album, which is sure to make a major splash in death metal.

The forthcoming record was recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by Erol Ulug at Bright Light Studios. Art was done by Adam Burke with layout by Chimere Noire and photography by Luckee Ngin. The fierce logo and indigenous artwork is enough to make us stoked for the full-length to drop.

Preorders the album here, or get it through Bandcamp.

Stay tuned for more updates from the band as the album release date nears.
