As Expected, High On Fire’s New Single “Cometh The Storm” F*cking Rules

0

In a little over one week’s time, High on Fire‘s new album Cometh The Storm will be out in the wild. Needless to say, the level of excitement surrounding it around these parts is through the roof, so it should go without saying that the title track they just dropped as the album’s latest single has only served to ratchet up the excitement a notch or two.

As you can hear/see in the video posted below, this track has everything I think you’d want from a High On Fire track in 2024. Does it rock? Yes. Is it heavy as fuck? Double yes. Is Matt Pike shirtless in the video? Triple yes.

Bassist Jeff Matz said the initial inspiration from the track came about after stumbling on the riff while messing around on his bass during practice. That little bit of experimentation led to what we got today.

“‘Cometh the Storm’ was built from a riff I started playing on bass at practice. I was noodling around with this melancholic harmonic minor line, just hammering the notes with my left hand, when Matt yelled out ‘Are we recording this!?’ The chorus riff was something Coady and I came up with when we were jamming in LA. Matt then came in and worked up some rough lyrics and came up with the vocal line.

“For the chorus, I used this fretless bass I’d acquired. The weight of the low frequencies this thing produced was insane—how it blended with the guitars and drums, it was like being hit with a sledgehammer. We knew right away that this was going to be an epically heavy track.”

As the band’s followup to their GRAMMY-winning 2018 album Electric Messiah, I’m sure there are some of you wondering if they’d be able to follow through with Cometh The Storm. If the rest of the damn thing is as good as this track is, then things are looking pretty damn good for the band as they celebrate their 25th anniversary year.

With just a few days to wait now, you can preorder Cometh The Storm if you’d like. Otherwise, you’ll just have get the album on April 19 wherever it is you get your music these days.
