Steven Tyler Made a Return to the Stage for the Grammys Afterparty

I can imagine the Grammys afterparty being a lot more fun than the actual Grammys ceremony, and it seems like this year’s Grammy afterparty came with a big surprise for guests as Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler made an unexpected return to the stage.

Tyler’s announcement this past summer that he was retiring from touring due to a vocal cord injury that he isn’t expected to fully recover from came as a heartbreaking loss to everyone who’s never really paid much attention to who Tyler is as a person. But, according to Loudwire, he felt well enough to perform a brief set at his Janie’s Fund Grammy party with some assistance from Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton, Extreme guitarist Neno Bettencourt, former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum, legendary Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood, and The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson.

The set started with a cover of Extreme’s “More Than Words,” then switched into Aerosmith originals such as “Toys in the Attic,” “Dream On” performed as a duet with country singer Lainey Wilson, then “Sweet Emotion,” “Walk This Way,” and finishing out with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker.”

There’s some footage on YouTube of some of the performances and you can hear Tyler’s voice is straining a little bit to hit the notes he used to be able to hit with ease. You can also see why most of the songs featured other singers, because Tyler basically needed someone else to sing over him to cover up his struggling vocal performance. It’s becoming clear that Tyler made the right decision to retire from touring and perhaps it’s time to give up on even these special, one-off performances.
