For Fans Of: MetalSucks Playlist Adds Autumn Lies Buried, Black Magnet and more
(Editor’s note: You’ve seen our weekly ‘Top Tracks’ playlist, but what we’ve got here is a sneak peek for a brand new weekly set of songs aimed at highlighting smaller acts. This will eventually make it to Spotify and Apple Music, but for now, you can check out the tracks below.)
If you’re new here, last week we launched For Fans Of, a weekly playlist featuring music from some of the up-and-coming bands in the metal scene. For each new release mentioned, we note three major artists/bands/projects on a similar soundwave so you can gain a frame of reference.
Sometimes it can be hard to get a bigger outreach for smaller projects, but we have to remind ourselves that we all start from somewhere. Our favorite artists didn’t wake up playing 10,000-capacity venues. With FFO, enjoy the wonder of discovering the underdogs and play them loud!
“Told Off With a Sawed Off” by Autumn Lies Buried
It’s important to have a strong opener, and that’s why for this week’s FFO, I’m introducing you to, Autum Lies Buried “Told Off With a Sawed Off.” Straight off the bat, this one launches into some extreme metal and has a fun hardcore swag to it. Taken from the band’s forthcoming record, Mob Mentality, “Told Off With a Sawed Off” is a cut-throat introduction into what this band is all about.
For Fans Of: Filth, Left to Suffer, Heriot
“Endless” by Black Magnet
This one needs very little introduction. Coming at you with intense industrial metal and a high-contrast music video, Black Magnet’s latest single, “Endless,” is a merciless explosion of self-destruction. It’s heavy, over-produced sound adds a fuzziness to every instrument, creating an almost suffocating feeling. “Endless” is definitely a track for metal fans who enjoy the sounds of distorted electronica woven throughout.
There’s no fucking about with this one.
For Fans Of: Author & Punisher, Code Orange, Marilyn Manson
“Grey Mourning” by Blood Vulture
If you asked me to summarise Blood Vulture’s latest single in three adjectives, I’d say dark, mythical and climactic. But to extend on that, Blood Vulture are a bunch of dudes from New York who are reviving the nostalgic sounds of grungy, melodic goth rock with a dash of doom metal. “Grey Mourning” is a haunting single with meaty riffage and spellcasting vocals.
For Fans Of: Black Label Society, Katatonia, Ozzy Osbourne
“Pure Adrenaline” by Fox Lake
While not underground, Fox Lake are certainly on the rise in the hardcore scene right now and is a name you might have heard once or twice. Their latest single, “Pure Adrenaline,” mostly speaks for itself and is a gut-puncher sure to raise your blood pressure. Sonically, it balances somewhere between hardcore metalcore and hip-hop.
For Fans Of: Make Them Suffer, UnityTX, Varials
“The Rot Beneath” by Grand Cadaver
You can never go wrong with a bit of Swedish metal, and what’s better than a metal supergroup? We’ve previously ran a few scarse pieces on Grand Cadaver, but I’m here to remind you about just how fucking good they are.
No polished riffs, no subgenres, no bullshit. “Rot Beneath” is three straight minutes of raw power and is a death metal tune through and through. It’s also the title track of the band’s forthcoming EP, which comes out August 15 via Majestic Mountain Records.
For Fans Of: At The Gates, Lamb of God (early years), Aborted, Grave
“The Same River Twice” by Cryptodira
Cryptodira are a daily reminder of why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Upon first glance, progressive experimental metal doesn’t exactly spring to mind. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised with their newest single, “The Same River Twice,” as it slaps you in the face with grinding riffs and roaring vocals.
Standing at just under two minutes, “The Same River Twice” is short but sweet. And though its sharp finish is super satisfying, it also has you begging for more.
For Fans Of: Trap Them, Motionless in White, Death
“Abyssal Lament” by Vow of Ruin
Vow of Ruin summons you to come join their cult on this merciless single “Abyssal Lamaen.” The track is made up of brutal blast beats, and get this, it’s the band’s second ever release. Taken from their forthcoming debut studio album, Abyss, I’m honestly genuinely pretty jaw-dropped at the idea that any project could drop something this heavy and this polished so early in their career.
If you want to impress your mates this week with a super fresh recommendation, Vow of Reason is a pretty solid shout.
For Fans Of: Thy Art Is Murder, Archspire, Napalm Death
“Fistful Of Worms” by Believe In Nothing
I think it’s important to end this playlist the same way I opened it. Heavy and disruptive. Bringing you a slice of Black/noise metal goodness on this blissful Saturday afternoon, “Fistful Of Worms” is an annihilating tune with an industrial spin. The opening few seconds are a disorienting frenzy, but don’t worry, you find yourself in the chorus.
For Fans Of: Watain, Mayhem, Darkthrone
