Slipknot’s Teasing Even More Nostalgia Bait for Their 1999 ‘Self-Titled’ Album
For the last year or so, Slipknot‘s been sort of stuck in 1999 mode. They’ve been celebrating the shit out of their 1999 self-titled album that put them on the map and rightfully so — that shit was a banger when it came out 25 years ago. Now that we’re 26 years removed from that record, you’d think they’d be moving on and maybe looking to new music (or at least to their plans for Iowa), but you’d be mistaken.
Recently, the band released a weird and cryptic new website that has users enter the phrase “comeplaydying” before taking them to a countdown clock and an old promotional photo of the band. The URL for the site is a reference to the self-titled album’s opening track, so it’s obvious that we’re still looking back on that album.
Additionally, the band posted on their Instagram page an image that shows an early cut of said self-titled album, along with the caption “worse forwards than backwards”.
It’s worth noting that a 25th anniversary edition of the album would be the band’s first official revisiting of said record since its 10th anniversary reissue from 2009. That version had 25 tracks and included the O.G. album and some unreleased demos and whatnot. The accompanying DVD included footage from 1999 and 2000, including some live performances and the album’s three music videos. There was even a super deluxe edition that came with extra tchotchkes for fans to get excited about.
This all means we’re finally going to get that long-awaited 25th anniversary reissue of Slipknot’s self-titled, right? I mean, that’s the only real explanation for all this… We’ll know more when the countdown clock ends on July 21.
