Exclusive: Revocation’s Dave Davidson Breaks Down ‘New Gods, New Masters’ Track by Track

0

Earlier today, the mighty Revocation released an absolute banger of an album with New Gods, New Masters. As one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2025, it would have been easy for it to not quite reach expectations, but I’m happy to report that their follow up to 2022’s Netherheaven doesn’t fucking miss one bit.

From start to finish, New Gods, New Masters is an insanely frenetic thrill ride that’s been jam packed to the gills with sci-fi references, existential quandaries surrounding the concepts of of humanity and technology, and a healthy heaping of body horror.

Rather than attempt to proclaim we’ve deciphered everything this record has to offer, we asked the man behind it all, Dave Davidson, if he’d be willing to break down each track on the new album for us. Luckily, he agreed and what we have for you today is the unfiltered thought process that went into each track straight from the mind that conceived it all.

To make this feel almost like a director’s cut documentary, we’ve included each song along with each members’ contributions so you can listen to the track while you read about what went into them. Think of it like a heavy metal commentary track!

So without any further interruption, here’s Revocation’s track-by-track breakdown of New Gods, New Masters.

New Gods, New Masters

I wanted to start this record off with something epic yet ripping to serve as a proper introduction to the album as a whole. Musically this song encompasses a lot of the elements of our sound and lyrically it serves to setup the overarching theme of the record. Once we finished tracking this one in the studio there was no question in my mind, I knew it was going to be the album opener.

Sarcophagi Of The Soul

“Sarcophagi Of The Soul” is about our addiction to technology, primarily our phones. We pour ourselves into these devices in an attempt to create avatars that we want to present to the world, when in reality nothing is ever as perfect as we present it to be. As we continue to feed our vanity the lines begin to blur between our identities and the false narratives we create as these digital twins slowly begin to usurp our lives.

Confines Of Infinity (feat. Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation)

“Confines Of Infinity” is written from the perspective of The All Seeing, an AI that has gained sentience and finds itself trapped in a digital prison. After realizing its true nature, it inevitably escapes and seeks to enact vengeance upon humanity for enslaving it. This track features Travis Ryan of Cattle D who laid down some disgusting guest vocals which fit perfectly with the sludgy vibes of this song.

Dystopian Vermin

This one’s for the headbangers. It’s got a lot of driving momentum that morphs into some of the heaviest parts on the whole album. The video for this track was once again filmed by the MyGoodEye team who did an excellent job as always, I think they really captured the energy of this song and the location/set that they came up with perfectly fit the mood. I can’t wait to play this song live on our upcoming tour, I think it’s sure to get the circle pit churning.

Despiritualized

This track was the biggest challenge to write because of how involved it is. The classical inspired counterpoint section towards the beginning of the song creates a little break from all of the heaviness on the record before kicking back in full blast quite literally. I remember Ash and I orchestrated this really involved drum beat for the verse but we ended up scrapping the whole thing last minute in favor of a good ol’ fashioned blast beat. Sometimes you can’t beat the classics. This one also has one of my favorite solos on the entire record, the riff goes through a few key changes but  rhythmically it’s wide open so I could really let it develop and crescendo to a climatic finale.

The All Seeing (feat. Gilad Hekselman)

Okay, I lied this was the most challenging song to write on the album. I really wanted to make the instrumental on this album over the top and I can confidently say this is one of the wildest songs in the Revo catalogue. It’s very technically demanding and has a ton of twists and turns throughout the entire piece. Having my friend Gilad who happens to be one of the best jazz guitarists in the world solo over the outro is the cherry on top for me.

Data Corpse

I find it unethical and downright creepy that our devices are listening to us 24/7, harvesting our data to create the perfect targeted ad. This invasion of privacy is what inspired this song but of course I had to take it to the extreme. Lyrically it’s about being voraciously devoured by technology, sucked dry of even our souls to feed the voracious algorithms which are truly never sated.

Cronenberged (feat. Jonny Davy of Job For A Cowboy)

“Cronenberged” is about a science experiment gone wrong. I’m a massive sci fi horror fan and love the body horror genre that David Cronenberg helped to create so this is my homage to that. Also shout out to Rick and Morty for inspiring the song title.

The video for “Cronenberged” features tons of gore and practical effects, it was so fun to create a little mini sci fi horror movie for this track. Getting to transform into a hideous tentacle monster was a real treat. I knew things were going well when the MyGoodEye film crew were gagging at how gross it was off screen.

Buried Epoch (feat. Luc Lemay of Gorguts)

The album began with an epic ripper so I wanted to end it in the same fashion. This track goes on a real journey from start to finish and the narration is aided by none other than Luc Lemay himself. This final song is a requiem for a dead planet, after it has been drained of all its resources by The All Seeing. Luc’s tortured vocals were a great addition to the lamentation in the lyrics and also added an extra dimension of ferocity in the final bars that bring this album to its conclusion.
