Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019

0

It is Friday, my dudes. Whatever that means to you — whether it’s an excuse to get hammered, maybe the start of a much-needed weekend getaway, or even if it’s just another day of benign existence — we’ve got a compendium of the latest heavy tunes to keep you going.

Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019Ranges
Babel (A Thousand Arms) (out 9/30)
FFO Russian Circles, Mono
Listen “Demagogue

We may not have much for metal out here in yee-haw country, but luckily, the bands that do call this place home tend to be outrageously talented. Bozeman locals Ranges offer expansive, emotionally charged instrumental post-metal, 100% DIY on their own label, A Thousand Arms. If you dig atmospheric stuff along the lines of Russian Circles, Babel will strike all the right chords as it rises and falls within a massive, awe-inspiring sonosphere.

Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019Rosetta
Terra Sola (self-released) (out 10/1)
Full Album Stream

Surprise, mothafuckas! After months of ultra-intense touring, Rosetta caught us all off guard with a a three song follow up to Utopioid. “After so much time on the road, we just wanted to get together and write one big, panoramic piece of music; but as sometimes happens, the material took on a life of its own and the scope of the release expanded dramatically. . . In a sense, we’re signing off on an era, and welcoming a new creative environment for the next cycle,” per an official statement from the band. As always, Terra Sola is independently released and pay-what-you-want, so get on it!

Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019Toxic Holocaust
Primal Future: 2019 (eOne)
Listen “Chemical Warlords

Did somebody say “RIFFS”?! Here’s a whoooole lot of ‘em — so many that your brain will be a pile of mush by the end. Primal Future is exhausting (in the best way possible), bursting with energy, and downright maniacal. While the record is thrash at heart, Joel Grind’s creative approach brings a freshness that should keep the “throwback” descriptor from being thrown around willy-nilly. His vocal performance in particular is a departure from his previous sound, choosing to go with a more punk-y delivery over his former blackened rasp. There’s a fuckton of additude to be found within… but mostly, riffs.

Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019Boris
LφVE & EVφL (Third Man)
Listen “Love

Japanese trend-smashing trio Boris have just unleashed a new baffling double LP, LφVE & EVφL, presented as two independent works “encapsulating conflicting connotations that interweave and become intricately entangled with one another, gradually eroding before becoming utterly singular.” Not having the slightest idea what to expect, I’m thrilled to announce that this album does indeed rip. I hesitate to say it’s “atmospheric”, lest it be construed that the music is easy-going and heady, but Boris have certainly used texture to their advantage on this one. Plodding drone/doom is met with ghoulish vocals and other unidentified sounds to create an experience that’s simultaneously meditative and distressing, hypnotic, yet spine-chillingly creepy.

Deserted (Relapse)
Listen “Boiled Over
Read the MetalSucks review

Deserted feels like the musicians just trying to have fun and make a great death metal record. It sounds the part . . . The tight songwriting also helps set them apart. None of the songs outstay their welcome, and the musicians always have something going on that catches the ear (helped by a mix from Kurt Ballou that highlights the Stygian depths).  Deserted is an OSDM throwback record, no doubt, but it’s also an incredibly well-done one. Don’t leave it festering in its grave.”

Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019GosT
Valediction (Century Media)
Listen “Wrapped in Wax

Any day with new GosT is destined to be a great day in my book! Squeezing all of the best things about heavy music into one convenient, concise package, GosT’s trademark blackened synthwave was the first to evoke my massive crush on the genre. However, if last year’s Possessor was Daft Punk meets Satan, Valediction is more of a sinister Depeche Mode. It’s about as goth as it gets, just in time for your retro Halloween spooktacular!

Shit That Comes Out Today: October 4th, 2019Exhumed
Horror (Relapse)
Listen “Naked, Screaming, and Covered in Blood

Guts! Brains! Chainsaws! That’s Exhumed for ya. With most tracks clocking in at around two minutes, their new record Horror will have you convulsing in hysteric, blood-soaked terror in less than a half an hour. Bludgeoning death/grind dives into every gore trope imaginable, maintaining a raw, old-school vibe polished up with modern production. While their last couple releases were arguably more “mature”, this is a return to their balls-to-the-wall youthful belligerence — not quite their strongest work, but still a disgustingly killer album.
