Rammstein’s Till Lindemann Releases New Single “I Hate Kids”

Perpetually-fascinating Rammstein frontman Till Lindemann has released a new song and accompanying music video, “Ich hasse Kinder” (“I Hate Kids”). And as is often the case with Rammstein and Lindemann, there’s a lot to unpack here.

Let’s start with the song: it’s catchy as hell. It’s not that far off from Rammstein — there’s slightly less emphasis on electronic elements, making for a more straightforward neo-arena rock song — but it’s the best neo-arena rock song I’ve heard in ages. Someone should please play it for the members of Five Finger Death Punch, Pop Evil, and that one band named after a frying pan.

Then there’s the Serghey Grey-directed NSFW video. Like Rammstein’s controversial clip for “Deutschland” (2019), it trades on fascist imagery in a very thought-provoking way, drawing a direct line between groupthink and bullying. Parts of it are filmed like a first-person shooter, parts of it are straight out of an ultra-gory slasher flick. All of it is more worth your time than the next generic warehouse video or whatever.

Something else worth mentioning about the video: whereas “Deutschland,” true to both its title and Lindemann’s heritage, took aim at the less-savory parts of German history, the “Ich hasse Kinder” video focuses on Russia (a few shots were even clearly filmed in Moscow, discreetly, I assume). The last time Rammstein played in that country, guitarists Paul Landers and Richard Kruspe shared an on-stage kiss in protest of heinous anti-LGBTQ laws. Between that incident and this video, I would not count on Rammstein returning to Russia any time in the near future. Sorry, Russian Rammstein fans.
