Sh*t That Comes Out Today: August 22, 2025
After yesterday’s news, all I’ll say here today is to remember that life is short. Far too short, really. So please don’t hesitate to hold those close to you, tell ’em you love them, and reconcile with those you may have drifted apart from after all these years. You never know when it’s your last day.
Arcadea
The Exodus of Gravity (Relapse Records)
Arcadea is a trippy space opera powered by synth rock. It features Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor and synth masters Core Atoms and João Nogueira, who each come together to produce highly danceable, groovy tunes that should at times evoke some sort of emotional feeling, too. It’s groovy, trippy, and though it’s not the most metal thing ever, it features Dailor and that’s enough for me to include it here. Broaden your horizons, kiddos.

Bask
The Turning (Season Of Mist)
Draped in the nature of Appalachia, Bask bring with them a sound that they’re calling “heavy Americana.” What that means is you get an album that spans genres and twists and turns under its own creativity. The Turning tells a psychedelic story that should linger with you a while.

Deftones
private music (Reprise/Warner)
This is the big’un. Five years out from their previous studio effort Ohms, the Sacramento, California-based juggernaut we’ve all come to know and appreciate as Deftones are back with another slate of multi-layered, often dark, always evocative tunes. After almost 40 years in the business, this album further proves that they’ve still got plenty in the tank and a whole lot to say.

Minus The Bear
Menos el Oso (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) (Suicide Squeeze)
We’ve been saying it a lot, but nostalgia continues to be one hell of a drug. For the dudes in Minus The Bear, that statement fits with the 20th anniversary of Menos el Oso, otherwise known as the band’s seminal 2005 album. Comprised of members of Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving, Minus The Bear have a unique sound that should be heard.

Signs Of The Swarm
To Rid Myself Of Truth (Century Media)
Do you need a bit of deathcore in your life this week? This is the release for you. Signs of the Swarm seemingly don’t understand the concept of “chill the fuck out”, as their music just goes hard as all get out right from step one. With riffs so thick you’ll choke on ’em and rhythms that’ll break your neck, this is what you’re going to turn to if you want your music to have some heft to it this week.
