Jesus Piece Break Up as Members Say It’s “Been Dead for Some Time”
For fans of Jesus PIece, their sudden breakup announcement yesterday likely feels like it came out of nowhere. Yet according to members Luis Aponte, John Distefano, and David Updike, this has been a long time coming and they don’t want anyone to get confused over any potential look-alike acts.
In a statement posted on the band’s official Instagram stories, those three aforementioned members said they’d been inactive for a while after an unnamed, yet important member left the band. Despite that person’s departure, the trio said they had no interest ever performing as Jesus Piece again.
“Jesus Piece has been dead for some time. A member quit abruptly for personal reasons and we felt wrong continuing without him. Anything you see associated with this name or similar, playing our music and using our art, is not related to anything we worked for over the last 10 years.
“We are proud of everything we did and it changed our lives forever. To try and continue that without us or in spite of us, is a mockery of what we’ve done and tried to do. Thank you all for everything! – Lu, John, Dave.”
That bit about not getting suckered by anything remotely resembling Jesus Piece is interesting, since vocalist Aaron Heard has hinted in the past that he’d continue the band and is currently involved with something called Je$us Piece.
It’s always a bummer to learn that a band that’s risen as far as Jesus Piece had is suddenly no more. We’re talking about a band that in 10 short years managed to grow from their beginnings in Philly to eventually play with heavy hitters like Code Orange, Knocked Loose, and more. It’ll be interesting to see what Aponte, Distefano, and Updike do next.
