DOWNLOAD THE NEW OPETH SONG

watershed.jpgBy now, many of you are probably aware that a new Opeth song, “The Lotus Eater,” has been made avail for free download (we’ve included it below to make your life easier.). It’s the first time the world has gotten to hear official, studio quality new music from the band’s so-highly-anticipated-it’s-ridiculous forthcoming release, Watershed.

Now, I spoke to someone last week who allegedly heard this album, the word they used was “disappointing.” And I already don’t like this song nearly as much anything from the band’s back catalogue, including the group’s last album, Ghost Reveries. Still, it’s not a bad song by any stretch of the imagination, and Opeth music generally greatly benefits from repeat listens. So for now, I choose to remain optimistic about this one.

We’ll know for sure when Roadrunner releases Watershed on June 3. In the meantime, I think it’s pretty cool that they’re just giving this song away; just posting it on the band’s MySpace page would have led to lots and lots of illegal downloading anyway, so why not just make it easy for the fans?

Interesting that you make that note about the song not being good as others in the back-catalogue…

I’ve been seeing similar responses on other sites and personally, I liked the song right off the bat.

Digging the clean singing/growl mix in the song, I like the soft breaks in the song, and it has a very Opethian vibe. I didn’t expect to like it right away but I did.

Anyone who even sort of likes this song, owes it to themselves to find the full 8:51 long version of this song, as it rocks hard…

Must say.. from what i’ve heard.. ive definately liked…
The Lotus Eater is a nice ol heavy brute, which Opeth always kick arse with…
and the Porcelain Heart is more traditional Opeth sounding… not as heavy as The Lotus… but its still Opeth…

  • I dig the new stuff more than Ghost Reveries mainly because of the better use of the keys (save for perhaps those sweeping measures near the end of The Baying of the Hounds). I think people are hoping for My Arms, Your Hearse/Deliverance brutality, but this one and Heir Apparent certainly seem heavy enough and they’re definitely darker in atmosphere than most of GR, which in retrospect, feels like more of a transition album.

  • Huh. Really digging it, actually. There’s a Katatonia vibe going on up until the uber-prog mid section. I too, like the more prominent use of keys. Looking forward to this album like nobody’s business.

  • I’m not at all surprised. Haven’t listened to it yet, but even though they are clearly brilliant, it would be pretty amazing if they could continue for much longer, after so many great albums already. Maybe they just don’t have much more in them…Life changes, and with it the music bands make–for better or worse.

I must say that I’m extremely fond of this song.

You had me ’til “Haven’t listened to it yet…”

This piece actually rocks! It doesn’t sound like any other song by Opeth, yet it has their signature all over it! So this is just a truncated version right? I mean, 3 measely minutes for an Opeth song?

  • Eddie says:

I liked it. It’s different from their older stuff, but in a good way.

  • Kye says:

    Pretty fucking sick I think.

hmmm….blastbeats in an opeth song, i like the fact they want to expand but im also sort of disappointed.

  • Conor says:

@rohit: Where the hell have you been? Do you own any Opeth other than “Damnation”?

  • hotsauce says:

Whoa! Just listened to the full length of the song and all I can say is… DaYum! Especially the funky breakdown in the middle! It’s like George Clinton writing a metal song!

YEAH!!! I didn’t know what to expect with this new album. I’ve been really digging what I’ve heard thus far. The Lotus Eater track is definitely awesome, I was surprised how short it was though considering Opeth’s usual song lengths… Really looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
