Ascend - bear climbing up a mountainI do believe that if there were a soundtrack to a bear climbing up a mountain, it would sound precisely like Ascend, a sludge/doom collaboration featuring Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Eagle Twin) and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Goatsnake, Engine Kid).

Thanks to Iann Robinson for tipping me off to this excellent band. It’s not the kind of thing you’d really, ya know, rock out to, but FUCK is it heavy. And bear-like. Climbing a mountain.

Ample Fire Within drops May 27th on Southern Lord.

    Iceburn is one of my favorite bands, ever, EVER.

    The samples on Myspace don’t reveal too much but it it’s more Iceburn than Engine Kid I’ll be happy. (not that I hated Engine Kid but they were no Iceburn)

    Disclaimer: I don’t listen to a lot of sludge, so I don’t know my way around that genre very well. I know all the classic and popular modern doom acts, or doom/death acts, and I can really get into their stuff.

    This does not grab me at all. It sounds like Sunn O))) meets Electric Quarterstaff—and I don’t mean that as a compliment.

    I’ll re-listen stoned. Fair?
