FEAR NOT, METALLIC MASTODON FANS — HARD ROCK AIN’T ALWAYS *SUCH* A BAD THING. BUT DON’T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, HERE’S SOME TESTIMONY FROM QUICKSAND

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 at 5:26pm by Kip Wingerschmidt

I was definitely intrigued and a little trepidatious to read from our recently-posted interview Troy from Mastodon’s explanation that their “new material is going to be more under the rock category”, but when he mentioned Yes, King Crimson, and Zappa as examples, I realized that he means progressive rock more than hard rock. That was welcome news to me, as I have found so many “hard” rock bands to be a bit too boorish in lieu of making music that inspires.

In any case, we all know how Vince feels about Quicksand, and I am again offering the band up as an example of hard rock that simply ain’t half bad, in my mind somewhat of a rarity. Some call this band “alternative metal” but since that gay-ass genre name reminds me of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, I shan’t be using it EVER AGAIN!!!

QUICKSAND“Dine Alone”

QUICKSAND“Baphomet”

(both tracks from the band’s 1993 album Slip)

Well, as an admitted and shameless fan of hard rock AND metal music, I’d have to say I really never liked Quicksand. And yes, I’d call them more alt-hard-rock-metalish music.

  2. Soundgarden aside — they were amazing.

  3. lung says:

one of my favorite albums of all time.
    quicksand was under appreciated.
    and under listened too.
two albums was just not enough.

  4. awesome says:

this is why i love MetalSucks and read it every day.

way to drop some knowledge friends

  5. Easily one of my favorite bands of all time. Walter & Co. blew away Rage Against the Machine when they opened for them at the former Liberty Lunch in Austin many, many years ago.

  6. Revrant says:

Interesting listen, almost sounds like a certain big band drew inspiration from them with that first song.

  7. canea says:

Agree with lung. I’m going to get out my CDs now.

  8. Jesse says:

Walter from Quicksand started with the hardcore band the Gorilla Biscuits. Quicksand was not quite hardcore but I found them more in the Fugazi realm.

So Kip Wingerschmidt………………WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH NED’S ATOMIC DUSTBIN?????????
I would never have called them metal, and their recent resurgence makes me ill, but they were an awesome band for their time. If they were ever called “alt-metal,” then whoever branded them in that genre is a total f’kin idiot.
Remember in the early 90s all the really good metal bands (and some shitty ones too,) were dropped from their labels and kids who lived in small remote towns like i did couldn’t find the stuff they did on the tiny indie labels. Unless you wanted to live on with Slayer (who peaked at South of Heaven [imo],) Metallica (who peaked at Justice,) and Megadeth (peak was So Far, So Good, etc.) or worse Poison or Guns “N Roses, then you kinda had to settle for the “new alternative.”
I’m not talking about kids in the big cities, they may have had access and continued buying up metal discs. For me, it was Voivod, Ned’s atomic dustbin, suicidal tendencies, and chili peppers. all those bands have an edge, but i never called them metal or “alt-metal” whatever that means.
BTW, in case you’re interested, i don’t live in the sticks anymore. Gott sei Dank!

I’m probably gonna get blasted now by a bunch of teenagers who were barely twinkles in their parents’ eyes in the early 90s.
“Ned’s Atomic Dustbin?” who the fuck are they? they sound pretty gay to me! that ferret must be one old gay fart! Right???

  11. Revrant says:

Interesting read, no, I imagine you’re more likely to be blasted over the Peppers than anything else.

  12. ezra says:

Simply one of the best albums ever released in any decade. I have to resist the urge to play nothing but Quicksand on my radio show every week. Way better than Ned’s I mean, 2 BASSISTS? c’mon!

  13. iwrestledaferretonce says:

Iron Maiden’s got two bassists now too….I don’t see the point, but there are people out there who swear it’s the best they’ve done since Powerslave….Shite I say.

@Revrant: Are you trying to goad me into a back and forth thing about Chili Peppers?
All I’m gonna say is their early years of Clintonesque funk blended with SoCal punk was inspired and real. (probably all the drugs they were doing at the time.)

  14. gnarlk says:

quicksand is all around goodness. slip is still brilliant 15 years later…

  15. iwrestledaferretonce says:

After listening to “Dine Alone” again now that i’m more awake than last night, they remind me of Tripping Daisy. Same kinda short lived career and odd take on music. Had that cult appeal similar to Quicksand. not bad at all.

  16. Jim says:

Never heard of these guys before, but those 2 tracks are pretty damn good, thanks for enlightening me. Now to go find this album.

  17. Hot Carl says:

Only an elitist would bring up Quicksand and that is why I love them and MetalSucks.

  18. Revrant says:

ferret: Nope, it’s just up until their very latest effort, by and large only a few songs on the albums were very good, people gush over them and all, but much like Sugar Ray I think they tended to sound less like a band up until their final album before the hiatus.

  19. Karl J says:

Yeah, not sure where the Ned’s hate is coming from. They certainly weren’t metal in any sense, but they were a great alt pop rock band – I still spin “God Fodder” on a fairly regular basis. Good stuff.
I never could get into Quicksand. I always heard them brought up in comparison to early Helmet, but I never really saw the connection. Oh well, I’m glad some of you guys are digging them, though.

  20. noyokono says:

Quicksand was cool, but I am more of a Rival Schools fan really (NYC show sold out in no time!)
