I LIKE THE NEW ISIS SONG. WAIT… I LIKE THE NEW ISIS SONG???

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at 2:44pm by Vince Neilstein

isis wavering radiantRegular readers of this site know full well that your editors are not fans of Isis or Neurosis. It’s not what we dislike those bands… we just don’t like ‘em. Don’t see what all the fuss is about or why people go so fucking ga-ga at their mere mention. No matter how many times people we trust say “duuuude… you gotta listen again! trust me!” every time I listen again (and there have been many), I still don’t give a fuck.

So it is with extreme surprise that I report the following: I like the new Isis song.

The song is called “20 Minutes / 40 Years,” comes from the band’s forthcoming album Wavering Radiant (May 5th, Ipecac) and is currently streaming on their MySpace page. Maybe it’s the stepped-up production value (courtesy of Joe Barresi of Tool and QOTSA fame), maybe it’s the fact that this is an actual song (even at 7 minutes) as opposed to the usual rambling messes Isis pumps out (thank you again Joe Barresi). Whatever it is, it’s good. Maybe what I’m really saying is that I love Joe Barresi. And this would certainly be the truth.

Inevitably, thousands of old-school Isis fans will now come out of the woodwork saying that this new song sucks and the band has jumped the shark. So it goes.

Not hating, but this whole article pretty much sums up how I feel about DEP.

  2. Revrant says:

    ozzyzak is seconded.

  3. vmanv says:

Isis is cool as background music

  4. gnarlk says:

hating very much when i say this article sums up how i feel about gojira or meshuggah…

  5. seveword says:

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited for the new ISIS.

  6. moose_knuckle says:

The new song is awsome , kinds sounds like something off Panopticon but with slightly better production (not that the production was ever bad). I fucking love isis and cant wait for the new album. People like vince should give Panopticon a good listen, coz its all awsome and stuff.

  7. Dabe Betancourt says:

You should listen to the new song “Ghost Key”.

  8. jonowev says:

Wait… you dont like Isis?!!?!?!?!?!?!!! 0_o

  9. Mike says:

Looking forward very much to the new release. Where can you listen to “Ghost Key”.

  10. Kodiak says:

I’ve never been an Isis fan (saw them play after Jesu in ‘07, I almost fell asleep before leaving after the 3rd song) and this song doesn’t change things.

Wasn’t the biggest Neurosis fan until Given to the Rising, but after immersing myself in that album, I grabbed their back catalog (through Souls at Zero) and they’re one of my favorites now. This is also helped by the show they played here in Feb. of ‘08 – I can’t even describe how amazing that show was for me.

  11. SxPxDxCx says:

Some of it reminds me of that band from the 90’s Handsome.

  12. iolanach says:

So, let me get this straight. You guys love God Forbid and Chimaira but hate Neurosis?

    OK.

  13. TMR says:

Errrmmm… I’m with vmanv, they sound cool as background music… or maybe if I’m tripping on something.

  14. billybob says:

    Finally!

  15. Adam says:

Well… I’ve now listened to this album (yes, album, it leaked) 4 times, and considering ISIS is my absolute favourite band in the universe I have to say I am disappointed. But really, the bar has just been set so high by them.

It is growing on me, but I just can’t bring myself to give it any more than 3/5. Which is a shame, but at least I have 4 other solid albums by them to bop my head to.

  16. Wayne says:

I’m generally a fan of ISIS, and I like their new material quite a bit. The production is STELLAR. Lots of rich low end. Thank God for Joe Barresi.

  17. Sammy says:

Oh I get it! 20 Minutes/40 Years. Listening to Isis for 20 minutes only FEELS like 40 years. Kind of like dog years.

  18. Tommy Victor's gut says:

You dislike Neurosis? What are you, an asshole or something? Pull the cock out of your ass and just listen to Times of Grace. Don’t take that the wrong way.

  19. Dave Betancourt says:

    @Mike

The whole album has leaked on the internet. Search it and listen to “Ghost Key”. It’s great.

  20. Brandon says:

As much as i like Isis, Neurosis are leagues beyond them – not only for pioneering the whole “post-metal”/prog-sludge subgenre, but for sheer brilliance, variety, and originality of their music. I can easily see why someone wouldn’t like Isis, but Neurosis are fucking legends.

  21. jamie says:

    i hate to fill expecrtations
but isis has been a favourite band of mine for years
and despite their new songs bein good
    i expected more
    im let down

  22. The Mighty Fucking Quinn says:

I like Isis a great deal.I’d consider myself a moderate fan.But as someone who struggled to get into them before one rainy day(literally, it was a dreary day and my head was in a shitty space) when I had my mp3 player on random, So Did We came on and it cheered me up for some inexplicable reason, as music can tend to do.I am going to get my hands on the new album and listen from there to establish my opinion, but I can understand where you guys are coming from.Sometimes, despite a ton of hype, a band can only really sit right with you under certain circumstances.

  23. Charlie B says:

Its ok, then again I am not a big ISIS fan. I like them but tire of their music pretty quickly. Actually the only “post metal” band I like is Neurosis.

  24. Conduit says:

Rambling messes? Just what songs are you talking about there? From what I can tell there are no old school Isis fans, since the original douches who were pissed at Oceanic (not sure where what Isis you guys try out but do that album. And their early stuff is very sludgy, noisy, and yep, Neurosis-like) jumped ship there were no old school fans. I’d like to know how you guys listen when you try them out, I assume since you guys review albums that you listen to the album as one piece with headphones? This new album is the beez-neez, but I’m a fanboy, go figure.

How you guys continue to not understand Neurosis while pimping Cult of Luna is just beyond me. Maybe it was easier to understand before the mass saturation, but Neurosis were releasing albums in the early nineties that were just way fucking different than any metal, hardcore, or anything release. They were blowing my mind along time before Through Silver in Blood came out. Chalk up 90% of any metalgaze you hear today to that album, both directly and indirectly from Isis’ impact. Seriously think the biggest problem with people not liking certain bands is not grasping a sense of their history and musical impact. Or shit, their ears aren’t pleased by the vibrations the band makes.

  25. Chimp-O-Neg says:

You dont like Isis or Neurosis?

I see. So the title of your website wasn’t just a clever name then.

  26. Blackthorned says:

I think that the whole ‘why doesn’t this site champion Neurosis and Isis’ question is kind of redundant due to the highly opinionated nature of Metal Sucks. It’s a blog after all and will frequently seem to be a contradiction but that’s the nature of opinion – and what I like about this site to be honest.

My two cents is that Isis will continue to make good albums like this one and Absence. However the two before them set the bar so high I can’t help but feel a little let down. And that’s probably not fair on them but it’s just how I feel – and anyway, it’s a testament to Oceanic and Panopticon really.

  27. justin says:

i dig the new song… maybe next time i have an hour of free time, i’ll put the headphones on and give “wavering radiant” my undivided attention… really, i think that’s the only way you can listen to isis. not as background music, but with your full attention or meditation, or whatever you wanna say… as a side note, i think it’s funny that everyone is pimping “oceanic,” and “panopticon,” but no one’s said anything about how utterly amazing “celestial” is…. as another side note, i can totally empathize with the people who are disappointed with any new isis… that’s how i felt at first when i heard “panopticon.” after “oceanic,” it took a long time for the next album to grow on me.

  28. Miroslav says:

    I’ll quote iolanach:

“So, let me get this straight. You guys love God Forbid and Chimaira but hate Neurosis?

    OK.”

  29. Senior Swanky (Beardo) says:

Oceanic is still and will always be my Favorite album, I’m a sucker for aquatic themed albums I guess. But the the last ISIS album was a bit of a letdown. The band doesn’t sound like they are progressing anymore & Aaron vocals just don’t quite sound right anymore. I’ll still buy the new album including the Vinyl. I just think the band peaked awhile ago.

P.S. Salvation was the best COL album.

  30. Senior Swanky (Beardo) says:

“Oceanic is still and will always be my Favorite album”
    Favorite ISIS album that is

  31. builtforsin666 says:

    I like ISIS

This sounds just like all of their songs.

  32. Nekcod says:

The only two ISIS albums I own are Mosquito Control and The Red Sea, and I absolutely love both!!!. I was excited to hear the new stuff, but quickly noticed that they are not the same band musically. Put another notch on the disappointment stick.

  33. dthrasher says:

I really enjoy Isis when I’m in the mood, but I already own panopticon/oceanic/absence of truth and those three are so incredible that I really have no desire to buy anything else from them.

  34. -gODGRINDER- says:

I will almost echo Vince’s statement but with one small edit:

I am not a fan of Mastodon. It’s not what I dislike that band… I just don’t like ‘em. Don’t see what all the fuss is about or why people go so fucking ga-ga at their mere mention. No matter how many times people I trust say “duuuude… you gotta listen again! trust me!” every time I listen again (and there have been many), I still don’t give a fuck.

  35. niggaplease says:

    Deleted? Really?

  36. Phil says:

No Vince you are right this is the best Isis song I have heard since they became “artists”. Fags. gODGRINDER, if you don’t comprehend that Mastodon is better than 99% of the metal releases your taste level is at at ASS.

  37. -gODGRINDER- says:

    Phil –

Flaming people for their opinions and using the word “fags,” huh?

I didn’t realize that 12-year-olds were starting to migrate over from Lambgoat.

    Pity.

  38. Aya says:

Post-metal is always my cup of tea. More of pure metal. :)

  39. alex says:

haven’t checked out this new Isis track, but with Panopticon went the boring route. Oceanic was great, however i’m seeing an exact parallel between those albums and the differences between Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye.

Oceanic/Blood Mountain are heavy, proggy, expansive and ultimately entertaining. Panopticon/Crack the Skye are both excessively long, overdependent on concept (and not execution), monotonous and not entertaining. i’m baffled that Crack the Skye has been so heavily fellated on this site (and many other, to be honest).

i’ll check out this new Isis, but damn, gimme some Old Man Gloom any day.

  40. alex says:

    fuck my grammar.

  41. The Dope King says:

    SMOKE WEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Aya says:

Heard the advance version. To be honest, not that impressive. Maybe it needs more listens but right now I’d rather go back to enjoy the latest album from my fave Post-rock band.
Check it out if you’re open-minded enough:
    http://www.blistering.com/fastpage/fpengine.php/link/1/templateid/15481/tempidx/4/menuid/2
Most underrated band ever. King of Post-rock, hands down.

  43. raszputini says:

Don’t know about the new Isis….I really like most of the Isis material up to this point, particularly Celestial and ITAOF…but I was pretty excited about it being released and so far, have to MAKE myself listen to it. I keep telling myself it’ll grow on me, but so far – no luck.

  44. DarkShaman says:

Still saving the new ISIS song for my psychedelic trip here pretty soon. I can’t wait. ISIS is godly music and if you can’t seem to fully comprehend that then I suggest to you either wake up and find your soul or ignorantly live your life within your neatly constructed boundries created by your beliefs and your tasteless spirit. happy trails.
