REMEMBER WHEN JOHN MARSHALL PLAYED WITH METALLICA?
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 at 10:00am by Axl RosenbergInvisible Oranges posted this pretty incredible footage of Metallica rehearsing in the summer of ‘92 with Metal Church’s John Marshall, who was the band’s guitar tech that was called up to step in on rhythm guitars when Hetfield suffered severe burns from a pyro accident on the band’s stadium tour with Guns N’ Roses. I think it’s pretty surreal to be reminded that Metallica have to rehearse just like everyone else.
Invisible Oranges also pointed the way to this blog by Marshall about attending Metallica’s induction to the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame a few weeks back. It’s a fun read, but it also has an actual photo of Pushead, who I’ve never seen before, and who in no way, shape, or form looks the way I’d imagined. THE ILLUSION IS RUINED!!!

John actually played with Metallica before 1992. He filled in for James in the 80s when he got injured skateboarding. John also produced the first Autopsy album if my mind serves me right.
This is such a cool article, John Marshall is a pretty cool guy and did some great stuff with Metal Church back in the day. Thanks for sharing all this!
Very excellent blog by Marshall. I knew he had quite a history with them but I had no idea he went all the way back to the beginnings, that guy has really been around and lived a cool life.

His mention of being in the emergency room in Sweden was interesting. I’d forgotten he would have been there. James had just returned to guitar the night before, so of course Marshall was on the road with them.
I have the rest of that rehearsal session on VHS from my book research. I should YouTube it…

Everybody needs to hear the audition tape in Kerrang! for metallica on this blog. It’s fucking hilarious. You thionk metallica are bad now…listen and imagine how bad they could have got after kill ‘em all.
