no one would care about this cd except for the fact that the band has a history. this album is no good, just like the previous album.
i would love to love a new katatonia cd though.

I disagree 100%. I actually don’t really like Katatonia’s way older stuff. The first album that really got me hooked on them was Viva Emptiness. Then, TGCD was actually a step back imo. They lost some of the atmosphere and abstract sound from Viva, and went straight for the more typical “Progressive” sound, like time signature changes, longer songs, etc.

NITND totally changes that. They’ve taken the production up a notch (layers upon layers of sound), it’s more abstract, more progressive, more atmospheric, and just plain better than anything they’ve ever done before.

While I’m sure you’re right that there are some people excited for this album because of the band’s history, I think that they might be the ones most disappointed with this album since it’s a pretty big leap forward. Newcomers to this band are going to be absolutely thrilled about this album I think.

Long story short. NITND = Katatonia’s Lateralus

agreed, there are some real accomplishments on this album. “The Promise Of Deceit” is a great track.

Oh, also, I’m pretty sure Forsaker isn’t actually their first single. They’ve been distributing it through various online outlets (You could get it from their mailing list about a month ago actually), but it sounds like “Day and Then the Shade” is actually their first single.

I read a little excerpt from a review from Akerfeldt on their myspace page that gave it so much ball-licking praise. It’s no wonder because it sounds exactly like an Opeth album. Both bands are awesome but this album just didnt do it for me as I already have many Opeth albums.

This is a great song, one of the best off this record, which is a great record. I love how heavy and melodic it is! Also, it sounds NOTHING like Opeth aside from the vocals sounding similar to Akerfeldt’s clean vocals.

    • fightingmike

I would put them more along the lines of a Euro Perfect Circle or a cleaner Enslaved than Opeth.
