MUTINY WITHIN ARE FINALLY “AWAKE”

Monday, November 2nd, 2009 at 12:00pm by Vince Neilstein

mutiny withinI have had Mutiny Within’s self-titled debut at the Mansion for about two weeks now, and I’m absolutely loving it. Loving it! Now’s your chance to experience a taste of what I’ve been jamming with a free download of album-opener “Awake,” available today only as a free download at RoadrunnerRecords.com.

This is the best “commercial” — for lack of a better word — metal record that I’ve heard in quite some time. While the mainstream metal canon has mostly stagnated over the past few years with rehash after rehash of umpteenth generation metalcore or breakdown-dominated deathcore, Mutiny Within have come along and finally added something different to the mix, adding a power Euro touch to their brand of American metal. The songs are top-notch, fist in the sky productions, led by the band’s razor-tight attack and Chris Clancy’s operatic vocals (for a sample of his vocal talents, check out this video). These songs aren’t catchy because the band are trying to write overtly catchy melodies… they’re catchy because they come from a genuine place (or at least I can surmise… who am I to make assumptions?).

Check out the free download of “Awake” while you still can, then come back here and let us know what you think. The band is currently on tour with Soulfly and will be making the rounds on the MetalSucks-sponsored Arch Enemy / Exodus / Arsis tour in early 2010. We’ve seen them locally here in NYC for years now, and they are not to be missed… that big sound you hear on “Awake” is not studio chicanery; it’s real.

    Good… good…

  3. Mike says:

This is pretty good, it would be even better if he didn’t resort to those pussy-ass emo-tastic growls off and on.

Scar Symmetry + Trivium = This stuff. I like it a little. I need to hear more from them but this song is tolerable. They obviously has musical chops so that is a plus. Curious to see what they sound like live. Always a sure way to tell if they are truly good.

  8. Jake says:

Generic as shit…There are way better bands out there doing the euro thing in America that pull it off much more originally. Check out Across the Sun…HERE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DdCvN8jxDY

  9. Neil says:

Are you guys serious? This shit is awesome. Emo growls? Are you completely deaf? I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album. Great stuff

  10. DemonicLemming says:

They’re not bad….but they have that sort of bland, Breaking Benjamin thing going. There’s really nothing that distinguishes them as special or different. I wouldn’t change the radio station, but I doubt I’d buy their cd, either.

  11. groverXIII says:

That was really good. I’m definitely interested in hearing more.

  12. Master Chah says:

I guess it is better than the demo that was on annual assualt 2009.

    I can dig it.

  13. NoNameNoSlogan says:

meh…this shit is boring. Oh man his voice is terrible, it sounds so emo.

  14. Jonathan says:

Well, I heard the demo Roadrunner released a while back, on the Annual Assault 2009 free download.
I really liked this song then, and I was glad to hear I’d caught a band who was still developing.

I really like what they did for the final version of this song. I really, really do, except for the face some of the underlying piano bits are taken out, but it is essentially the same song, with about a minute of music missing from its first incarnation. I have to say, I really like both versions, but the quality of this album version really outshines the prior one.

And to the commenter who posted the link to Across The Sun?
Thank you for showing me another epic band.

  15. I’ve had the Annual Assault 2009 for a while now, so I already knew about them. They’re not bad.

  16. Miguel G (Peru) says:

I recieved tha annual asualt last year, but no this year…… why?

The song is good, but feels a little generic to me. Need to listen other songs to do a proper judgement.

  17. David Hulsey says:

Saw them live a couple weekends ago. They were plagued by sound problems so I can’t really give an honest interpretation of how they sound live. I can say they are all very nice guys who I’ve known online for a few years now. When they started up they sounded almost exactly like Children of Bodom. It is good to see them branching out a bit. This is a very good song.

  18. mike says:

For some reason it reminds me of Into Eternity without the technicality and progressiveness. Solid tune, nothing wrong with clean choruses if properly executed.
