READER-SUGGESTED METAL BANDS THAT HAPPEN TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE MEMBER WITH A VAGINA, PART 2: I HATE SALLY

I changed the name of this series from yesterday so as to be marginally more P.C. and not alienate anyone who finds the term “chick metal” disagreeable. My apologies to anyone who may be offended by my attempt to be less offensive.
Today I’m checking out I Hate Sally, who were recommended by reader “aaron m.”
This Canadian outfit categorizes themselves as “punk/indie/thrash” on their MySpace page, but there’s also a distinct grind influence, if you ask me (then again, punk and thrash definitely provide elements of grind, so…). I’m digging what I’m hearing for sure – the riffs are just cool enough to get your body movin’, and resident lady-parts person Dee’s strained vocals are raw but still effeminate. It’s not the most unique music I’ve ever heard, but whatevs.
I suspect that some people will be turned off by this band’s sense of humor – even I rolled my eyes at their bio’s assertion that their music sounds “like Muckman chasing the Ninja Turtles through the depths of sewer hell” – but dismissing a band for not taking themselves too seriously is idiotic.
Hopefully I can sit down and listen to an actual album’s worth of songs at some point so I can adopt a stronger critical position on what I think of this band, but for now, I’d say give ‘em a listen.

I saw this band open for Protest the Hero once. Pretty damn entertaining, and Dee looks good in short shorts.

A little late guys. I hate Sally have gone their separate ways…And dude to the far right of that pic went on to join the latest line up of The Chariot…(probably because the two have toured together before)…check out the “Daggers” vid if you don’t believe me.
Last chariot tour though, Dan wasn’t there, and their tour manager Stevis was filling in his shoes…so he may or may not still be with them.

Yeah, unfortunately this band died awhile ago. I really enjoyed them. Posthumously getting some attention but their stuff is good enough to go check out anyways, so I guess its a good thing

i don’t want my grindcore to have a sense of humor, unless its a agoraphobic nosebleed-dick-to-mouth-resuscitation kind of humor, all the ironic grindcore bands just piss me off
well, there’s a difference between having a sense of humor and being a full-on jokey band. some metal bands take themselves WAY too seriously and wind up looking like an even bigger joke. i mean, nothing against the music the band makes, but immortal’s image has become an internet punchline.
You want grinders with a sense of humor? A Kid Hereafter in the Grinding Light is your band. They have an alter ego that is pure pop music. And oh yeah they are from Denmark. Doesn’t get much weirder than that place.
Actually, the “grind” band is just a side project of A Kid Herafter’s frontman. “A Kid Hereafter” is also an anagram of Frederik Thaae.
And they’re fucking terrible.
I miss these guys. Saw them once open for The Chariot, Misery Signals, and The Human Abstract and they blew me away.

Fuckin Dan Vokey on the far right was in The Chariot for a while, he just recently parted with them though.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and recommend After Forever. Invisible Circles is one of the best concept albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. The sound of the band itself isn’t anything special, but it was at the time they were starting out. Female fronted Death Metal, with melodic female vocals but one of the guitarists doing the scream stuff, lots of symphonic elements. If you check them out I recommend Invisible Circles because it’s a concept album about childhood; and they just make it seem so damned dark and realistic. There’s parts where you hear arguing parents from the child’s perspective, and I don’t want to ruin it if you haven’t heard it, but it’s just fucking good.

Awesome band, miss them a lot. They used to come to the Maritimes quite a lot. Their sound is so dirty as fuck.
Yeah, these guys were never fully appreciated, especially since their music was targeted to a live audience and they were stuck opening for twenty scene kids that just want to see the Chariot. Awesome drone-y stuff.

Wow, I grew in Kingston, ON (their hometown) seeing them live in high school.. originally they were a punk band, believe it or not.. and had like 50,000 lineup changes. Didn’t know they were still together
