METALSUCKS MANIACS CHOOSE MASTODON’S CRACK THE SKYE AS THEIR FAVORITE ALBUM OF 2009

Monday, January 4th, 2010 at 8:30am by

After posting our own year-end lists for 2009, we asked you, oh ye MetalSucks faithful, to tell us what you thought the best metal album of the year was. And you have answered, overwhelmingly voting for the latest from Atlanta’s psychedlic prog-metal masters:

mastodon - crack the skye

Interestingly enough, the album that got the second most number of votes (although it still lagged wwwwaaayyy behind Skye) was Anaal Nathrakh’s In the Constellation of the Black Widow – we’ll let you guys decide if that’s because people stopped voting when they saw Mastodon were the clear front-runners, or just because Anaal Nathrakh’s fans are particularly loyal.

And now we can all start arguing about 2010!!!

2009 was the worst year of my life. Hands fucking down. But for music and horror movies it was actually a pretty damn good year. I think I’d rather have jack shit come out in either category all year than have a repeat of the events of the former though.

I have to agree 09 was shitty for me as well, but the music was great.
I am not surprised that Mastodon is #1 but Anaal #2? Awesome
That album is like sticking your ear into a drill press its brutal.

  • Me

After much further listening, The Great Misdirect has risen high in my end-of-year list (competing only with Earthsblood). I didn’t pick up the new Shadows Fall until recently because I had sort of forgotten about them, but I can say that I now am a fan again. Crack The Skye started out really high on my list but then tapered as the year went on, not nearly as many repeat listens as BTBAM. I’m not underground/extreme enough to listen to THE THRAKH or some of the other favorites on this site, and for that I bid your forgiveness.

  • WowWee!

Mastodon deserve all the exposer they are getting and Anaal Nathrakh’s new album was good and doesn’t get talked about enough.
Even though I didn’t vote for any of these albums I thought they were both good and if you don’t like either of these albums your an ignorant bastard and your mom doesn’t love you.
    Happy New Year you pricks.

  • noobpotato

Anaal got 2nd? wow. Fancy posting a list of the rest possibly?

    • Shep

      Yeah that could be interesting.

I really think Baroness´ Blue Record Was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Better!! And The Red Chord´s FTTTM too, but Its my opinion after all.

  • Zoker

Crack the Skye is quite good but it didn’t make my year surely since I’m not a huge Mastodon fan… Anaal Nathrakh is a band I don’t care about… my favourite albums were Avatar – Avatar and Insomnium – Across the Dark.

I missed this site soooo much during the xmas holidays….

I still stand by my vote for Swarth. Crack the Skye never got much play from me, just wasn’t that into it.

Eh… not my choice. But hey, I’m not at all surprised.

  • Nigel McCloud

Ironically my number 1 and number 2 for best albums of the year, awesome

  • bearbomb

    Shocking.

Ok i was one of those mastodon nay sayers before but i gave this album a few more listens and although not #1 for me it was in my top ten. I really enjoyed it. Theres really not much im looking forward to for 2010 other than the new Arsis Album.

  • xpurposex

Post the full list, boys! We’re waiting!

    • xpurposex

BTW, good to see that Nathrakh got some love. Nobody talked about that record and it was incredible!

listen im sorry but crack the skye doesnt deserve album of the year. its damn good, sure, but on every listenthrough i get bored after quintessence. wtvr, props tho, love mastodon

    • I’m not racst, but I hate Oceano

It got best the after Quintessence. The 3 best songs are all after it (The Czar, Crack the Skye, and Last Baron).

  • Andy Synn

Statistically things average out more and show stronger trends the larger the sample group, so not surprised by Mastodon. Good record. Not the best.

Anaal Nathrakh are a great band. Have replaced the sadly departed Emperor in my mind. My sad, twisted mind.

They are also playing near me early next year, so I am extremely pleased and feel the attention they are getting is deserved. Even though there’s not enough of it still!

  • myke

that album didnt leave cd player for at least 8 months but it was my number 1 cd of last year.

  • Metalguy

Could you have published the rest of the fucking list? Lazy assholes

I was actually pleasantly surprised how many people (incl. me) voted for Absu. Really great record!
But after seeing how well AN did I decided to finally give it a listen and it really IS good! Not better than Absu, but still, pretty solid.

  • Malacoda

Any chance we can see all of the results, guys?

  • Dysenteric

I never did get into AN’s album, to me it was a step down from Hell Is Empty. Mastodon I’ve never liked.

I still stand behind my vote for Funebrarum.

  • D

    For me:

    1. Crack the Skye
    2. The Great Misdirect
