JOHNNY DEPP STANDS UP FOR THE WEST MEMPHIS THREE

I have a hard time believing that Johnny Depp is a metalhead, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know right from wrong. And apparently he’s going to be on the CBS program 48 Hours Mystery this Saturday night, speaking out in defense of the West Memphis Three:

If you don’t know who the West Memphis Three are or how it relates to metal… well, you probably shouldn’t be reading this website.

Anyways, good to know Depp might not be a total d-bag the way so may Hollywood stars are.

48 Hours Mystery airs this Saturday, February 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. I’ll try to remember to DVR it so we have something to talk about on Monday.

        Even Robert Smith of The Cure supports the Free The Three campaign, and so do I. Who cares if Depp is supporting it? He has a pretty big fallowing, it could help out, I guess.

          What Im saying is that the dozens of forensics experts and other trained professionals would put a much more ‘serious’ (for lack of a better word) face on this troubling case. Many people are quick to dismiss anything a celebrity says…… People unfamiliar with the case may see Johnny Depp talking about some metalheads behind bars and immediately have the wrong opinion about the case and change the channel, etc.

          people generally hate to see celebrities talking about anything except their films/art/music etc

    Ya know, when he played Willy Wonka he said in an interview that he modeled the character after Marilyn Manson. I know Manson is the totally metal God he was when we were all 12 but, still kinda cool.

    It wouldn’t shock me to learn that he’s a metal head. But he seems like he’d be more on the experimental side of metal. And not the straight metal.

      Go to wm3.org I’ve been following this case for almost a decade now, and it’s more interesting than ever. There is WAYYYY too much for me to list, but the best somewhat recent developments are this: DNA evidence found at the crime scene has excluded the WM3. A hair was found IN the knots used to bind the children, this hair is a positive match to Terry Hobbs, steve branch’s step father. Another hair found at the scene is a positive match for David Jacoby, the man Hobbs said he was with all day and night when the murders occured. John Mark Byers (the most vocal against the WM3 in the “Paradise Lost” films), is now 100% convinced of their innocence and campaigns for them. Pamela Hobbs (mother of Steve Branch) also believes they did not kill her son and campaigns for them. A sworn affadavit submitted by a hight ranking Arkansas prosecutor has been filed indicating MAJOR, illegal jury misconduct in the Echols/Baldwin trial. The affadavit says that the jury forman brought up Misskelley’s “confession” during deliberations and used it to convict. This ‘confession’ was legally barred from being used as evidence against them since Misskelley (who was tried seperately) refused to testify agains Echols and Baldwin.There case has now worked its way through the Arkansas appeals courts, and should soon be heard in US district court with a DIFFERENT JUDGE, which is a huge breakthrough.

      All these new developments are looking good for the WM3, but they are fighting a legal system that is dead set on NEVER admitting their mistakes and illegal methods.

            I remebre reading about this in Metal Edge or some shit back in the day , thikingthis could easlily be one of “us” . its ashame that this could happen in the greatest country in the world. I had forgottten to some extent about this, thus , my thanks…and BTW If Johnny Depp hadnt backed this , NONE of us would be talking about this today, so he has lready done his part !!!

            Vulgar- you are correct. I understand to some extent what Biff was saying earlier, but the reality is, celebs get people to talk about shit and keeps it in the countries subconscious.

            Also, if this had happened anywhere other than the deep south, these kids would have been out by now, if even prosecuted at all.

    I am a metalhead to the absolute core of my soul and read this site every day for the past year + ; yet I have never once even heard of the ‘west memphis three’. i need to do some reading me thinks.

      There is SOOOOOOOOO much to know about this case, prepare to have your mind and soul consumed.

      You’ve never heard of the Paradise Lost documentaries? I’m a little, no actually, a lot surprised you’ve never heard of this. There’s been benefit tours, benefit albums, 2 films which Metallica provided the music for (at least the first one), tons of celebs across the board (metal, punk,actors, etc) have spoken about it.

      Agreed. John Grisham wrote a book about a dude in Oklahoma that was wrongly convicted of murder. They used a forced confession that they got after something like 14 hrs of interrogation.

      Just another reason to not go to Rocklahoma

    I watched both Paradise Lost documentaries when they came out, but haven’t really followed the case very much since. Nobody but the WM3, that weirdo step-dad, and the Good Lord knows the truth, but it sure does seem fishy to me and that stepdad definitely seems guilty as hell (to be fair though, that’s clearly how the documentary wanted to portray him…which isn’t to say that it’s a lie or anything). If these guys are innocent (which I believe they probably are) then I really, REALLY hope they get some sort of justice (although nothing could give them back their lost years).

    But I do agree with Biff though. Anytime I see a liberal actor (or any actor, for that matter) spouting some sort of cause, I usually say “blah blah blah, fuck you” and change the channel. That doesn’t mean that what they’re saying doesn’t have any merit, but that is my first reaction.

    As far as Johnny Depp goes, he’s a great actor but a terrible douche. A few years ago I read some thing he said about America and I really don’t have much use for him. At the time, he was basically saying how he is going to live in France because they’re so much more sophisticated than Americans and the only time he would be in America would be to shoot movies. I don’t know if he ever stuck to that (probalby not, much like how Alec Baldwin vowed to move to Canada if Bush won). I’ve had a bad opinion of the guy ever since (fair or not). I don’t have much patience for people who bad-mouth the U.S., that goes double for people who make millions here in this country then talk shit about it. That being said, he is a terrific actor…much like my feelings toward Sean Penn. Still, if he’s trying to help these guys out, then that’s awesome and you have to tip your hat to the man.

      No Johnny Depp really did move to France. Actually I like that. What I can’t stand are people
      that are perpetually complaining about how much they hate America yet choose to live here. It’s
      certainly not a perfect place and it’s fine to dislike it, but, don’t stick around if you are just going
      to complain.

      France seems like a very interesting place, but also rediculus in a lot of ways. Recently they pissed
      me off with their Haiti comments. They claim we were “occupying” Haiti when we were going to help
      them and for WHAT? Why the hell would we occupy Haiti?

      Meanwhile the French governement is the biggest oppressor of those people. Since the creation
      of the country 80 percent of Haiti’s money has gone to France to repay a loan. Just like those
      bastards to bleed teh Haitians dry and then crap on us when we go to help them.

    Johnny Depp lives in France because that’s where his longtime-girlfriend-but-not-wife and kids live. He’s not an asshole, he’s just old now. Fuck it, if I were old I’d wear a stupid scarf and glasses if I wanted. He dropped out of high school to play in rock bands, and apparently he’d done just about every type of drug when he was a teenager. He should have stopped acting after the first Pirates movie.
    But still, he used to be the bad-ass loner when he was young. And he grew up in the South.
    Other than that, though, I don’t know what the fuck he’s going to say on the matter. Not like he was there when it happened.

    First of all, those of you that have seen the “Paradise Lost” Docs seem to be thinking of John Mark-Hyers , “The stepfather”……. He now SUPPORTS the wm3. Once the DNA evidence came out excluding them, he has done everything he can to spread awareness of their wrongful imprisonment.

    The OTHER step father, Terry Hobbs is the one that the DNA evidence points to, along with his alibi/companion for the evening, David Jacoby.

    Seriously, you guys already know the back ground of the case, but there are MOUNTAINS of new things to learn about the case over the last 10 or so years. WM3.ORG is a good place to start, or
    callahan.8k , which is a collection of absolutely EVERY document/court transcript/photo etc associated with case. The documentaries barely scratch the surface of this case anymore.
    BTW- they are filming a 3rd Paradise Lost as we speak in Arkansas right now.

    Also, Johhny Depp is TERRIBLE actor. He has made 2 (possibly three… “Gilbert Grape”) good films: Fear and Loathing and Ed Wood. The guy is a pretentious asswad and he along with Tim “Shitty” Burton play a major role in keeping Hot Topic in business.

      Now that you mention it, I am starting to re-think my view of Depp’s acting chops. I compared him to Sean Penn, but upon further consideration, he doesn’t hold a light to Penn. Donnie Brasco was good though.

    The West Memphis 3 case included a confession from one of those convicted, physical evidence including a knife and clothing fibers, Echols was seen in muddy clothes near the crime scene and Echols and Baldwin both told others that they had committed the crimes.
