SO, BLACK TUSK

black tuskI know a bunch of people who seem to think that Black Tusk are the shit. I think they sound exactly like you’d expect any band that’s got a guy with a giant beard and artwork by John Baizley to sound like. And while this certainly isn’t a bad thing, it’s mostly a “meh” thing. Why do we need another band like this? We need it about as much as we need another durka durka chugga deathcore band or weedily weedily tech-death band… which is to say we don’t.

Black Tusk have a new song called “Embrace the Madness” streaming on their MySpace page. It comes from their forthcoming album Taste the Sin — out May 25th — and it sounds exactly like it’s been written by a band that’s got a guy with a giant beard and artwork by John Baizley.

Check out the song and listen for yourselves. Perhaps you can all tell me what I’m missing.

yeah its not reinventing the wheel or anything, but it has an old school kylesa/damad feel, which is always good in my book.

    • Pete

The world needs more Beard Metal. If you’re good at it, then by all means, play it.

  • \m/Eluveitie\m/

If you’re searching for this band, whatever you do, don’t make the typo “Black Tush”

    • yetzer hara

that’s how i found black tusk… by making the opposite typo.

      • Double D

        HAHAHA! Nice one!

  • Motoghost

Although I’m interested in giving a listen to the new song from Black Tusk, I have to agree with you Vince. Bands in the vein of this whole Baroness/Mastodon type of music is getting about as repetitive and stale as deathcore. But it only continues to prove how stale and dead creativity is becoming, sadly.

  • this sucks

this is the metal equivalent to the TRON remake, no fucking way. I concur, meh.

    • stu1

      There’s no Tron remake. It’s a sequel.

  • Genial Gentile

That’s like saying “why do we need ISIS or Cult of Luna when you have Neurosis” or “why do we need Iron Monkey or Buzzoven when you have Eyehategod.” Sure, there are similarities, but I wouldn’t say it’s a direct lift and if you’re really into to that sound, you’re probably more likely to hear the nuances between those bands. Not to mention that Black Tusk, Kylesa and Baroness are all from the Savannah scene and have carved out their own regional style of crusty sludge.

Seconded. I think they got their own pretty distinctive style of Savannah Sludge, putting in a great(er) amount of punk/crust, which makes them maybe even better than Kylesa and Baroness.

      • stu1

        Ummm no. Better? No.

  • http://www.crustcake.com Andrew Wilhelm

You need to get hammered and see ‘em live, they played Chi-town a couple days ago with Weedeater and RULED.

    • Alec29

Agreed wholeheartedly. One of the better shows I’ve seen this year!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-Graham/588353202 Wayne Graham

Fucking agree. I was at this show, as well, and Black Tusk was fantastic

  • Beastmaster

Why don’t we just have one band from every genre and just listen to them because everyone else is copying them. Blah blah blah. This is the first rant I’ve actually thought was incredibly stupid on this website. No, Black Tusk are good and fun to listen to. So yes, for me at least, I think we need another band like this.

  • Glorious Johnson

better than anything on sumerian you got a hardon for

    • DemonicLemming

As meh as I feel about this band, I agree.

  • Phil

I kinda of agree, but I agree with Glorious Johnson much more.

  • Nathan

No we really don’t need a bunch of bands from one style that sound the same, because only one or two of the bands are actually original or worth listening to. I mean there is a lot more metal out there and it takes time to listen to it all, so I don’t want to waste it on a band that is only a mediocre version of better bands. Speaking of which, Baroness isn’t worth listening to because they suck and because Mastodon exists.

    • Genial Gentile

Mastodon and Baroness don’t now, nor have they ever sounded all that similar.

    • Chris

I disagree. I like Baroness way more than I like Mastodon. I agree with this article, but definitely think the same could be said about Sumeriancore. There’s really only 1 or 2 bands from both genres that really stand out. Beard-metal has Baroness and Mastodon and Sumeriancore has After the Burial. I would include Animals As Leaders but I’m not sure if that qualifies as Sumeriancore.

      • Aaron

I can’t possibly see how Animals As Leaders could EVER be considered shitty sumeriancore considering 1) It doesn’t sound anything like the sumeriancore bands, and more importantly 2) Isn’t on sumerian records…

  • battleid

Black Tusk is definately not the best of their subgenre but they rock live and seem like cool dudes.

I saw them open with Howl for Skeletonwitch and had a badass time.

Plus they will play the southeast (al specifically) unlike most other metal bands…..so i go out and support em.

    • Double D

Dag dude, Skeletonwitch, Howl and Black Tusk? I am fucking jealous of that.

  • Hillbilly fuckhead.

Way to be a buzz kill Vince… This is one of the releases I’m most looking forward to this year and you just took a giant shit all over it. Thanks dude… I know they aren’t the most original band on the planet, but I’ll take em over some of that re hashed Metalcore bullshit you and Axl seem to have a weird infinity for… I like you guys, but if you don’t get something, like say Kylesa? Or any of the other Savanna bands besides Baroness, please keep your comments to yourselves, or maybe hire someone that likes and understands Southern Metal.

    • Beastmaster

      Did you mean “Weird AFFINITY”?

  • Hillbilly fuckhead.

Why yes Mr. Beastmaster, I did. Thank you for correcting me.

  • Fish

Doesn’t sound to bad, but the drooling horned chick on the album cover has got to go.

  • http://WWW.MYSPACE.COM/TURBIDNORTH CHRIS O’TOOLE

Just because a band isn’t ground breathtakingly different from every other band in the world it doesn’t mean they aren’t good (standing on the shoulders of giants etc.). Every time i see those guys they put a great show with a butt load of enthusiasm, the bassist always has a huge shit eating grin on his face and they consistently sell a slew of bad ass merch and artwork. totally like able band that deserve to be on our stages and on our shelves.

    Cool beards too…

  • Steve

Beard metal is the new deathcore.

  • Double D

“And while this certainly isn’t a bad thing, it’s mostly a “meh” thing. Why do we need another band like this? We need it about as much as we need another durka durka chugga deathcore band or weedily weedily tech-death band… which is to say we don’t.”

Well Vince, when approx. 82% of your posts are negative, band-hating bullshit, it can’t really be that much of a wonder that you ALSO don’t like these guys, now can it? By the way, I have not heard these guys yet. I just wanted to get that out there.

  • BaronFelX

More metal should be beard based. An increase in beards as compared to whiny, shrieking “singers” is always, always, always a good thing.
