mantric - the descent

It’s funny how things work out sometimes; no sooner did I publish a post at noon proclaiming my desire to hear the entire new Mantric record (out today!) than I got an email from the band saying “Hey, here’s the record. Wanna stream it?” But of course we do.

So while this is most likely your first time listening to Mantric’s The Descent, it’s mine too; and so far I really, really like what I’m hearing. Turns out the record is a whole lot more diverse than the “Neurisis meets Opeth via Converge production” description I gave it earlier based on the tracks posted on MySpace; this record is really all over the metal map, and in a great way. Mantric inflict their progressive take on everything and the results are amazing. The band I’d actually liken them to most is The Ocean, if not quite in sound then definitely in concept.

Listen to The Descent and let us know what you think. If you like it, considering ordering a copy for just $10 or with a t-shirt for $20.

sounds great! Once i knew about this band, but i totally forgot, greetings from spain!

  • Chris

Been looking forward to this for a very long time. I listen to Extol at least once a week and I’m glad to hear something new from the guys…

    • Chris

Just finished listening to the album and I really enjoy it. Proggier and a bit more difficult to get into than Extol, but definitely a great album.

Spear of Heaven was the first song I heard on their myspace long ago… great song and album.

  • Gabriel

my pre-order didn’t arrive today, but i still get to hear the album on release date? wonderful!

i actually became an Extol fan after discovering Lengsel — It’s too bad there is no new Extol album forthcoming, but instead we got “The Kiss, The Hope” and now this!
    wonderful!

Album of the year, I’ll call it now.
    People will catch on!

  • OBEY1019

I am half and half on this the music is pretty good but the screamed vocals sounds like shit.

    • Michal

I like the screams and growls on this album, what’s wrong with you?

      • Chris

        i like them alot too

    • Silencerrr

I agree with the scream vocals, too metalcore-ish for my taste. Would have been better without. Still pretty good though.

    illlll

  • curt chillin

wow this is really good stuff

  • MK

Really like it more than I was expecting. Without a doubt going to make room for it on the already full iPod.

  • meekal

    Holy shit, This is amazing.

  • meekal

On second though, all this really does for me is make me want to listen to Opeth.
Which is probably not good for Mantric.

  • Beereded

Definitely hope I can pick this up from the store tomorrow. If not, I’ll get that t-shirt package.

  • AreWeHereNow?

Two thumbs up, Metalsucks. Please, continue to surprise me with unexpected treats like this. Just yesterday, I was thinking about how frustrating it may be to track this album down as I live in Korea.

  • cxj

i’ve been listening to this record all day, and i’m surprised no one has made the sonic corollary to burst yet. i hear it/them all over the place. good shit, nonetheless.

  • Gabriel

i knew this album is worth it for the first minute of “spear of heaven” alone, but the more i listen, the more pearls i find!

anyone notice the swervedriver influence in “choice?”

  • Slugger

Not bad. I would love to see these guys live I’m thinking they put on a sick show!!!

  • troe

Just started listening to this album. Already, my head is trying to wrap around it. When you said Isis+Cult of Luna had to stop working and listen. Hope it’s good!

    • troe

I’m actually fairly disappointed. Instrumentally, they’re fantastic. But the vocals made them sound quite mediocre. Shame, they almost had me. :(

The lyrics, music, and vocals are each the most life-giving listen

  • axy_david

    i think it’s jung good
    i still miss extol :((
but yeah the closest one 2 it anyway

    • axy_david

      ummm the lyrics are weird
      are they still christians?

  • fightingmike

I just got this record and i am really liking it so far. It is pretty challenging to really get into, but i am hoping it will stick after a few listens. I dont see the Isis comparison. I would say they sound more like a mix of latter era Extol, Burst, Oceansize, and a little bit of the psych-blackened(Nachtmystium, Shining, Enslaved) that is becoming more popular. The vocals are all over the place and the tone of the recording is really similar to alot of newer metalcore bands. A very interesting record!
