NEW IRON MAIDEN SONG! FOR FREE!

iron maiden - el dorado - the final frontier

Before we hand the MetalSucks reigns over to Kirk and Jamey for the day of their album release, we’ve got one hour left of June 7th… and I choose to use it to tell you that there’s a new Iron Maiden track available for free download via their official website! The site’s a bit overloaded with traffic at the moment and takes a little while to load, but it’s Iron fucking Maiden… and with a free track, a 30 second wait isn’t such a bad deal.

The free track, “El Dorado,” comes from the band’s forthcoming album The Final Frontier, set to be released on August 17th in the U.S. and the 16th in the rest of the world. Of the re-Bruce era of Maiden I loved loved loved Brave New World but couldn’t really get into either of the two albums released since then. I’m digging “El Dorado” — it’s got all the makings of a classic Maiden track, and at 7+ minutes it’s definitely an epic… but I can’t say I’m enthralled with it. The song’s not terribly catchy, and something weird is happening with the way the vocals are mixed. Still, it’s solid, and what’ve you got to lose by giving it a shot?

If you pre-order The Final Frontier in “high-quality mp3 format” (320kbps, I’d hope?) before June 21st you can get it for only $7.99. Kudos to Maiden for recognizing the fruitful potential of the Internet and embracing it, though I’d gather Maiden’s fanbase is primarily of the age that would prefer a physical copy. If I were Iron Maiden I’d be attempting to rake it in with super-duper-uper special deluxe vinyl limited edition hand-engraved gold-foiled Dave Murray’s shit-stained box sets… ’cause I know my fans would eat that shit up. But that’s just me.

Maiden will be on tour with Dream Theater this Summer. We’ll be there, dorking out to the max.

You guys were right about the site being busy, It keeps crashing on me : I Hopefully it will have died down later tonight.

I got the song, but it just feels like something is missing to me. Hopefully that’s just the die-hard fan in me trying to find everything that’s wrong with it. But you were right about the vocals, they are so much less dynamic on this track, hopefully it’s just a promo or demo or something and won’t be an issue on the rest of the album.

It’s actually not that bad. It’s got more of a back to basics “rock” feel to it. Actually reminds me of something off Killers meets the best stuff off No Prayer For The Dying. So all in all not that bad of an effort. At least they’re not adding any trend of the week influences in the mix. Motley Crue and The Cult Im pointing right at you. I cant see the audience going nuts to this for some reason though?

It feels a lot like Wildest Dreams to me, like it should bust out in that chorus

MADISON SQUARE GARDEN CANT FUCKING WAIT, FUCKING MAIDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A good song in all, maybe something up with the mix.. roll on new album!!

  • mallows

slightly underwhelmed when i first heard it at midnight. much preferring it on the second listen a few hours later, though! cant wait for the new album. the vocals sound a bit like one of bruce’s solo albums.

  • Tom

Am I the only one who really liked this O_o? I really liked the rhythm of it, and I can’t wait for the rest of the new album. I really liked the galloping chuggy-ness, and personally thought it was quite catchy.

But you are right. I don’t want a £4.99 download, I was a big 3 disc set with the album and a live dvd and a documentary etc. I want something of a collectors edition. I did notice they are releasing a version of the CD with extra content, but I don’t know what that means entirely.

    • Alex

No dude !!!!! i really love it too !!!!! when i first listen it i was entirely amazed.

  • Fufkin

Solid enough song, a further reminder I still prefer Maiden in any form to a lot of bands. But again what are they thinking when they mix this stuff? It’s lumbering, but the songs are always majestic enough to hold up I suppose.
True to form, Janick’s half baked part of the solo yet again shows how well considered Adrian Smith’s is at the start… those two are night and day!

For sure they will, do follow UK and European releases :)

Shit, I’M at the age where I want a physical copy, and I’m only 35. Cover art FTW.

    • jackattack

I thought the same thing. This is my favorite single art of theirs since 2MTM. Maybe ever.

  • timmah

I think it’s good. The mix is a little weird, but it’s a solid tune.

its on you tube now if you don’t want to sign up for a newsletter or what not

  • jackattack

Everybody is focusing on the vocals… and while they’re mixed a little oddly and Bruce might be losing his touch a tad bit in studio, the song is straight up rock n’ fuckin’ roll. Steve and Nicko are totally on point, and the solos are as good as ever.

  • Billy Chapman

All in all, after listening to it once, it sounds like a return to the SIT/SSOASS era which is a good thing. Maybe it’s just the single string pentatonic lick at the end, a la Wasted Years, I don’t know. I’ll reserve judgment for when I hear the whole album. I do miss Martin Birch though. Up the Irons!

    • jackattack

Someone on the MaidenFans board pointed out that “El Dorado” is very similar in sound to “Fates Warning” off NPftD (which is arguably the best song on that album, IMO). I think that’s pretty accurate. But I also saw a big of a “Wasted Years” connection.

It’s definitely a very straightforward song… but I’m really digging the production… maybe I’m reading into the theme too much, but it has a very space travel kind of sound to it. I can see the Millennium Falcon jamming this while zooming through an asteroid field.

  • cougar party

Can’t wait to listen to this after work!

  • TheHangingBrain

Solid stuff from a bunch of old blokes, cut them some slack. The new album is gonna wail!

  • Kuranes

I can get behind that. Thirty-five years into their career and still sounding killer.

  • Mike Arose

I’m a big fan of it the gallop always works with them very well. Plus the album cover is epic as always

  • DreadSpaniard

Wow. A Maiden song about Bernie Madoff and the financial crisis (cleverly buried beneath a tale about a legendary city of gold). Great galloping rhythm, anthemic chorus, and kickass solos. I can’t believe they’re still this powerful, considering how long they’ve been at it. Up the Irons!

  • Fish

Bad mix. I bet the sing rips live though.

    Up the Irons…

That’s all that needs to be said.

“Wildest Dreams” was a pretty solid song for me. Even with that bunk-ass cover art Dance of Death had.
