MASTODUDES TO TOUR WITHOUT MASTODON

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 at 1:00pm by

DUDE. I didn’t even know that the Mastodudes had side projects. Did you know? How come no one ever told me? I thought we were friends!

Fine. Whatever. As it turns out, there are not one but two Mastodon side projects, called West End Motel (pic above) and Fiend Without a Face. According to Metal Insider, Brent Hinds plays in both bands, while Brann Dailor is in Fiend Without a Face. And according to The PRP, the two groups are doing a short tour together later this month.

For Mastodon fanatics, it’s a chance to see both musicians play venues far, far smaller than Mastodon have played in years. And while neither band is especially metallic in sound — West End Motel has a country/bluegrass vibe and sometimes even dip into ragtime territory, while Fiend Without a Face, despite their name sounding pretty evil, actually play surf rock — Crack the Skye was by and large not really metal, either, and we all still loved that, because Mastodon rule. So you should still try and show some love, even if these shows will probably be mosh-less.

Here are the dates…

10/19 Columbia, SC – New Brookland Tavern
10/20 Washington, DC – The Red Room
10/21 Richmond, VA – Gallery 5
10/22 Asbury Park, NJ – Wonderbar
10/25 Allston, MA – Great Scott
10/26 Brooklyn, NY – Union Pool
10/28 Baltimore, MD – Golden West Cafe
10/29 West Chester, PA – The Note
10/30 Charlotte, NC – The Milestone
10/31 Atlanta, GA – The Earl

I got to see Mastodon in a 500 seater (stander) in Portland, ME a couple weeks ago. Very cool in that setting. Good set list too, I think they did 7 songs from Leviathan.

    • The Metalosopher

      Which venue in Portland?

      • Full Metal Life Jacket

Port City Music Hall. It was my first time going there. I had no idea how small it was until I walked in and saw the stage practically right there. Really cool show.

I was at that show as well. It was awesome.

    • Igottawocket

Yeah I saw them when they played a Myspace secret show in Albuquerque, 300 stander. It was crammed… and absolutely awesome. Sadly they only played Crack the Skye so it was a pretty short set but still… it was awesome being right up and personal.

  • Vlygar

    I loving their Surfbilly material.

  • gnarlk

    that fiends stuff is awesome….

I think I just came a little… I love surf rock, and if these dudes are playing it I may just have to suck it up and go to smelly asbury park. Then again, Brooklyn or West Chester might be worth the drive.

Oi! Only parts of Asbury are smelly! Seriously though, they’ve done up the shore-area of it pretty nice (or so I’d seen this summer when I was driving through there doing stuff for work).

    • Conrad

Live in Jersey long enough and the smell just becomes part of the charming ambiance.

Looking forward to the Wonderbar date.

I love it that this guys have so much to give artistically that not even a band aptly named “Mastodon” can contain their creativity.

To this day, it never ceases to amaze me how many people got their asses kicked by the “Divinations” intro and the “revelation” that Brent started off playing such a “non-metal” instrument as a banjo. I happen to think he’s a better guitar player for it, too.

Oh, and by the way: Bluegrass RULES.

“Oh, and by the way: Bluegrass RULES.”

      This.

Saw Fiend without a face opening for Mastodon a while back. Pretty funny stuff. I wonder if the rest of audience got it.

  • BASSQUATCH

I knew about both bands from Mastodon’s DVD The Workhorse Chronicles, but I had no idea those groups were still together.

Also, Brent Hinds plays in a classic rock sounding band called The Blood Vessels. Nothing ground breaking, but not a waste of time either.
