SONGS I LIKE BY BANDS I DON’T

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 at 10:30am by

Yesterday’s news that Haste the Day have kicked the bucket seemed perfectly times with a post that those fine madams at Reign in Blonde dropped over the weekend: “Songs I Like By Bands I Don’t.” I share my fellow Mansion inhabitant Axl’s viewpoint that Haste the Day’s demise isn’t worth shedding any tears over, but they did have this one song — one song — that I really dig. It’s the self-titled opening track from 2007′s Pressure the Hinges:

More than anything it’s that opening guitar riff that gets me — the swagger, the groove — while the rest of the song, kinda like the band, is interchangeable with any average or slightly-above-average metalcore released in 2007. But man, that riff! That riff.

I could go on about songs I like by bands that I don’t, but I’ll leave that to you guys; is there a band you can’t stand except for one slammin’ song that gets ya in that special spot?

I dig that chorus. I’ve always really like vocal harmonies.

  • http://www.myspace.com/barbelzoa Lordassenfroth

Ghost man on 3rd By Taking Back Sunday

    • DustintheWind

Yeah they’re a guilty pleasure of mine too..some of their choruses are just so fuckin catchy…

  • MadSkins

I don’t like Sevendust at all but whatever tune they have on the radio right now is catchy as all fuck and not a horrible song. “Forever” or something like that.

  • BumpItCharlie

I’ve recently become obssessed with that nevershoutnever song the Sarge posted last week. That kid has a dynamite voice and that song is just catchy as hell.

    • jamesjones

seconded, that song is really good

  • Matty O’Shea

Darkest Hour “Eclipse”. I don’t hate everything by that band, but a lot of their stuff is very monotonous to me, but the riffs in that song are all killer.

  • Blargh

“Miss You” by Blink 182. Great tune.

    • Pastor of Muppets

Blink-182′s entire self-titled album was surprisingly excellent. I’d say that’s an album I love by a band I don’t particularly care for.

      • The I

        Yeah, I love that album.

Then again, I kind of like Blink-182, even if I’ll only admit it on the internet.

    • Derp

I’ve a quote once that I believe is true:

“There are two kinds of people in the world: people who like Blink 182, and liars.

      • Derp

        *heard

  • yzermantiis

I’m sure there is a Hatebreed song I could throw in here. Or maybe that single Time Bomb by A Perfect Murder. I’m not big on xtoughxguyx stuff but that song is pretty good….

    • MadSkins

Good call on Hatebreed. Not a fan but there’s some stuff on “…Satisfaction…” that rips.

  • http://Ballzack Mishka

I HATE The Devil Wears Prada, but I knew I would have to see them open foor Killswitch (who I love) so I thought I would listen to somthing from their latest record, and I like Danger:Wildman, it was heavy and quite good, but everything else I have heard by them blows. same with Bring Me The Horizon, I like the opening of The Comedown, but that is IT, I hate everything they have done. and I don’t like Haste The Day, but I like the song Madman since it wa splayed on the radio in indianapolis every night.

Agreed TDWP no bueno. Hahah but there new song Escape is damn good.

      • homesplice

Seconded I don’t like them, but that song is tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

      • Sambo

Their whole Zombie EP is amazing. Doesn’t sound like anything they have done on their first 3 albums at all.

    • logan

I did like that song outnumbered by devil wears prada

  • Type-O-Negative

American Love by Haste the Day, the rest of their shit sucks but that song has some cool harmonies

  • http://fullmetalattorney.blogspot.com/ Kelly Hoffart

How about Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box”?
Or the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black”?

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktuWC9ZXdkY Bob Cock

Nirvana’s live album is awesome, but I’ll agree with you on the Stones. Can’t stand them otherwise.

    • hotsauce

      Paint it Black
      Sympathy for the Devil
      Under My Thumb

Only Stones songs I like. But I think I like the G n’ R cover better of Sympathy for the Devil.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktuWC9ZXdkY Bob Cock

        Okay, “Sympathy” I like too.

    • http://www.myspace.com/barbelzoa Lordassenfroth

another song by a band im not into is the agony scenes cover of paint it black

      • CarsVsChildren

        No love for Gimme Shelter?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tanner-Westhomas/1506171449 Tanner Westhomas

Oh fuck yeah, i thought i was the only other person whos heard that song

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktuWC9ZXdkY Bob Cock

I liked Sirens a lot, but It Dies Today’s “A Threnody For Modern Romance” is the only song I can listen to off The Caitiff Choir. The solo! The choruses!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Butler/100000300276967 James Butler

have you heard “Forever Scorned”… theres some really good songs of theirs on that cd

  • Chainsaw Majini

“Forever” by Jessie and the Rippers

    • \m/Eluveitie\m/

They did a badass cover of “My Generation” with Danny on lead vocals too.

  • engleprunt

    Project 86 – Spy Hunter

    • Sambo

I love that band. You should listen to the songs Sincerely Ichabod.

  • el fucko

Baroness – track 2 off of the blue album.

  • Vasteburai

    Great song- break stuff
    Fuck limp bizkit.

    • Rik

I like quite a few Limp Bizkit songs. That is certainly not one of them.

  • kmfcm

“Almost lost” by Kylesa. It’s memorable, unlike anything else of theirs

    and “puritania” by Dimmu Borgir.
It’s the perfect breakdown no metalcore band had bothered to write by then.

  • AARONIUS

Haste the Day is/was? a good band. They weren’t reinventing the wheel, but they knew how to make it roll for sure. That’s a good song.

Oh a band I can’t stand but a song I like is “Before I Forget” from Slipknot.

    • Rik

Surfacing by Slipknot fitted this criteria for me for ages, but nowadays I actually quite like them in general.

  • BASSQUATCH

Can’t stand Escape the Fate, but there’s this one song that my girlfriend plays every time we hang out that is catchy as fuck.

  • Pastor of Muppets

“Bullets” by Creed. If they wrote more songs like that, people wouldn’t have a reason to shit so hard on them.

    • bleak46n2

      1

  • The Vredesbyrd

    Song About Killing – Caliban.

Terrible band, but that song fires me up when it comes on the iPod.

    • Driven9

actually i dig a couple of their songs. Good (if generic) melatcore. – always gets me moving.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Conner-Kubitz/100000455409032 Conner Kubitz

“Arms of Sorrow” by Killswitch Engage. I know a lot of people like ‘em, but I never got into them except that one song.

    • Driven9

wow really?! that’s the one song? not telling you what to like, but you should def. give some of their other stuff a chance, cause “arms” if easily some of their weakest work. please listen to all of ‘Alive or Just Breathing’

      • Beenyad

        ^that

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jose-Rodriguez-III/1435762004 Jose Rodriguez III

    Anasasis (Xenophontis) by Parkway Drive
Young, Rich, and Out of Control by Emmure
A Broken Hand (Live version) by Despised Icon
Not Ready To Die by Demon Hunter

  • http://www.schenkeltown.com Schenkeltown

i saw them open for as i lay dying a few years. ago. could have done with out the “god is looking out for you” bullshit at the end of their set

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholi-Stephaan-Cervantes/1281091549 Nicholi Stephaan Cervantes

The Art of Dying by Gojira
    Incarnated by Obscura
Imogenis Puzzle Pt. 2 by Psyopus
    Seven by Symphony X

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andres-Pallavicini/100001748263922 Andres Pallavicini

That was also the only Gojira song I liked for ages, but it eventually made me try again and I was in love.

  • Chris Cahill

The Latest Plague by From First To Last= Great song
    Everything else by FFTL= AWFUL.

  • Beavis2084

Nickelback… or however that is spelled…

ONE song they got is that “Side of a Bullet” about Dimebag.

If you read up on it (mabey in the liner notes, idk) u will note that the lead guitar section is made of Dimebag outtakes from Vulgar display and Far Beyond Driven.

Anyway.. it is the only song from that band, which i otherwise can’t stand.

  • Tanner

Too bright to see, too loud to hear – Underoath.

Aside from the irritating “help us god” message the tune spews out, I think its a maturely written song for them. The ending hits like Shane Carwin in the 1st round.

  • Matthew Grant Anson

The End of Heartache by Killswitch. Everything else bores me.

    • bleak46n2

u need to get their first album with that white singer (jesse leech)… everything they did after that was downhill…

      • Rik

I think you mean their second album. And personally I far prefer TEOH. Definitely been going downhill since that though.

  • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

Say Goodbye by I Killed The Prom Queen
    Wasteland by 10 Years
    Bleeds No More by Silverstein

  • Jizzmaster3000

    Lifted – Suicide Silence

  • Douchechill

The Ghost Of Tragedy by Day of Contempt
Magnolia by Bury Your Dead (Bruso was the fucking man)
Left To Rot by Rose Funeral
Stiletto by Symphony In Peril (most catchiest breakdown ever but fuck they suck.)

  • CarsVsChildren

The Bleeding by Five Finger Death Punch.

Horrible band, with terrible lyrics, but the guitar tone at the beginning kills me everytime.

    I wish it didn’t.

    • bleak46n2

      same here…
      and yeah relationship issues suck…

  • Kevin Halsted

I really enjoy Haste the Day, up until their last, unmeasurabley mediocre metalcore release with almost a COMPLETELY different line up. Two new guitar players, new drummer. Ridiculous.

Mourning Palace by Dimmu Borgir. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is a good album, but I love that song. And I don’t particularly like Dimmu otherwise.

I always got The Bleeding by FFDP stuck in my head. And I fucking despise that band.

  • Sam

Origins and endings-winds of plague, pissass band, good jam.

  • jakeinyourbox

Lucifer’s Rocking Chair by the the Cancer Bats

Has to be one of the best party songs I have EVER heard. Everything else they have done or will do pales in comparison.

  • big dicked dog

    DUDE STFU. VINZE NEILTROLL

  • DustintheWind

“The Seduction” by He Is Legend

  • Primateforever

Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja by lostprophets.

    • brent

Was one of my favorite tunes in junior high.

  • Poopenshaft

    Bury Your Head – Saosin

    >.< shh guise don't tell anyone. kthx

  • Caleb
  • brent

    The Bled-The Last American Cowboy

Shitty band. They’re even semi-local (I live in a Phoenix suburb, they’re from Tucson, which is just a couple hours away) and I can’t stand them. But they captured lightning in a bottle with this track.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Cairncross/1530102028 Ian Cairncross

Wake The Dead – Comeback Kid
    Apocalyptic Havoc – Goatwhore

Can’t get into the rest of their songs, but those two are sick.

  • kyle

bleeding mascara from atreyu, kicks in like fuckin tornado, almost makes wonder why atreyu are such bitches. for real though, fuck atreyu.

  • Gorestain

Who We Are, also by Haste the Day is really good. It was the first song I’d ever heard by them, got my hopes way up, then everything else they did was pretty much terrible.
