We’ve been raving about Hate Eternal’s Phoenix Amongst the Ashes for some time now, and as of this coming Tuesday, you can finally own the wooly mammoth of an album for yourself. But if waiting another four days feels like waiting an eternity — and with a record this good, it ought to — well, fret not! Your friends Axl and Vince worked it out nice, so you can hear the album right now. And you MUST hear this album RIGHT NOW. It is a goddamn motherfucking masterpiece of death metal, and will surely end up on every sensible year-end list. But be forewarned, dear readers: this album will crush your skull into dust.

Like we said, Phoenix Amongst the Ashes comes out this Tuesday, May 9, on Metal Blade. You still have time to pre-order it, though! Choose from a variety of physical packages here, or order a digital download from iTunes here.

And if you haven’t done so already, you should definitely check out this interview that MetalSucks’ own Axl Rosenberg and Anso DF conducted with the mighty Erik Rutan. He had all kinds of fascinating things to say about this record’s creation!

Now enjoy Phoenix Amongst the Ashes

If you can remember any of these songs 10 minutes after listening to the album, I’d be surprised. Boring stuff here. A pummeling, unrelenting mix does not constitute memorable riffs.

    • OBEY1019

I agree completely, the only thing I can remember is blast beats…but thats all their albums.

      • Giuseppe

Maybe you should listen to it again… and appreciate it well… i dont remember just blast beats… neither all their albums are just blast beats, you should have a better memory… and ear?? to appreciate it well ;)

    • SirJohnPaulDeath

Death Metal IS pummeling and unrelenting(?) Maybe you should listen to pop music. This is a great album…THE END!

    • hATE-eR

Remember that ‘old’ saying, “If it’s too loud, you’re too old”? Perhaps it applies here. This album definitely has better structure and production compared to the other Hate Eternal albums. You really need to crank it to appreciate it…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Livingston/25310975 Robert Livingston

Dude, it’s death metal. What were you expecting? Nice and slow, R. Kelly-style?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Colbert/535041444 Dave Colbert

I remember most of the songs actually, dumbass. Very memorable stuff right here…

    • Alex Bass

      i totally agree

  • I, Monarch

Holy shit, The Art of Redemption is nuts!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shane-Tallent/100000411561578 Shane Tallent

      pretty great i agree man

    • C.A.W.

Just blast beats???? what are they talkin bout??? Gotta be tired as shit afta going thru this one in its entirety. Wrist domination!

  • Spicer

I agree crushing and heavy, but seriously nothing memorable, kinda like one big mutha f’ing swarm of bees. Nothing much separates these songs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nathan-Hoskins/37510078 Nathan Hoskins

    Boring music.

Also, what the hell were they thinking with this album cover?

Heavy for the sake of being heavy is obnoxious.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Colbert/535041444 Dave Colbert

What the hell do you think death metal is supposed to be?! Soft and easy listening? Whiney little bitch…

  • Wade Wiseman

To think, this could have been what the new Dream Theater album sounded like!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nathan-Hoskins/37510078 Nathan Hoskins

      I would have cried.

      • Rik

        With joy.

Hate Eternal = The musical equivalent of being bludgeoned to death. I love it. \m/

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-MXickman/502613553 Brandon MXickman

it kind of sounds like music on the last song.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Colbert/535041444 Dave Colbert

You know “music” can be completely atonal and disharmonic, right?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Drew-Goodwine/1693216336 Drew Goodwine

Music is sound that’s all it is. This is amazing music in my opinion.

  • Deth

I love Hate Eternal but I’ll conceed that it’s generic and pretty much a blurr of blast beats and riffs that, in the end, is nothing memorable. Each album’s songs could be interchanged with others and I’d never know the difference.

They certainly aren’t a daily listen but when I want fast and brutal, they fit the bill nicely.

    • Irenicus

      This !

  • SirJohnPaulDeath

This album is a Masterpiece of DeathMetal…Brutal Musicians,Brutal and exceptional recording and mix. This is as good as it gets in this genre.SirJohnPaulDeath gives it a horns way up! \m/. You can’t take it? Don’t brag about it Girlieman!

I appreciate what’s going on here, but I’d choose Ulcerate over this most days. Guess it just depends how badly I want my ears destroyed. Still, it crushes pretty much. This will be on a lot of year end Top 10′s. Not mine, but a lot of others.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Zhou/528416617 Eric Zhou

Yeah, Ulcerate is a lot better.

    • Graham Mitchell

      Ulcerate fucking rules.

2011 seems to be the year of masterpieces. Obscuras Omnivium, Monumental Torments Element of Chaos, Origins Entity, now Hate Eternal. This is awesome.

  • Zac

    This crushes.

  • Adam

I gotta say, I’ve never been a big fan of Hate Eternal. Never had anything against them or anything, I just never got into them. I usually only listen to their albums when I want to hear Tim Yeung or Derek Roddy. This album, however, drew me in instantly! Definitely going to be picking this one up.

  • Maderchod

    HE = not maderchod

  • soup

do people actually enjoy this junk?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Colbert/535041444 Dave Colbert

      Yes, I do immensely.

      • Bricktops

        Indeed…

  • herpaderpposer

i’m not here to hate on hate eternal, but can someone explain to me what I am missing? what makes these guys so great?
INB4 “herpa derp you poser, these guys are too extreme for you”

    • alex

death metal is becoming too much like black metal for me. just cant bare to listen cause its just not impressive in a creative way. cool they play really fast a lot. over it. take high on fire over this any day.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Masayuki-Meh/100002239836200 Masayuki Meh

How to evaluate good death metal is simple.

1: How long you can keep headbanging.
2: How many shit you can shit on your unwashed pants.
3: How many unheard riffs are there. But if riffs become too experimental, the album turns perfect garbage.
4: Composition should be so tight that no holiness can intervene.
5: Slow parts should be ominous and sound like summoning evil gods or hell’s gate opening.
6: Fast parts should be relentless and sound like unhloly punishment for humankind.
7: Variety of songs on the album. High diversity(*) = good. No diversity = also good.
*: High diversity should be not to harm the evil atmosphere of the album.

So, new HE album is masterpiece, right?

  • Graham Mitchell

this makes up for the ICP shit

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Poulsen/698474030 Daniel Poulsen

    Stream doesn’t work….

  • Matias Demeke

Abysmal Dawn’s 2011 album was better.

    • Chad

Abysmal Dawn’s latest was as generic as a crack-addicted hoe

  • Metalwolf

Not really my thing, but for all the creaming over this album, I checked it out. Holy balls is The Art of Redemption insane. It was about the only memorable song on it for me though. Cool stuff throughout, just doesn’t really grab me.

    • Metalwolf

Actually, Deathveil and Hatesworn brought the goods too, this thing is growing on me.

  • GOD

my intestines literally came out of my mouth because of how disgusting this album is!!!
One of the best albums I have heard in a while. For those of you who say its not memorable, who gives a fuck death metal music is supposed to be intense as fuck and not some shit that is very catchy you can dance to. That 2-step shit for instance, what the hell is that?? Get in the pit and fuck someone up and get your face smashed, thats what death metal is supposed to be. If you know music you’ll know what is different. If you want memorable shit go listen to Kenny Rodgers.

    • SirJohnPaulDeath

      THANK GOD!

    • Metalwolf

I don’t entirely disagree with you, but attitudes like this are what make a lot of people write off metal as noise. Yeah, it’s great if it’s brutal and insane and makes you go crazy in a pit, but if that’s its only purpose, why listen to it at home? Death metal music is still music, and if it’s not musically satisfying then it might as well be random.

This is a pretty decent album in that regard, but your post just made me think of this.

  • Sam Kang

Erik Rutan is a great producer, but I don’t understand why he (or the record producer or the bands) always has his productions compressed to hell during the mastering stage of production. Yeah, death metal should be bludgeoning, but I can turn up the volume of a well-mastered recording and get more out of it than from a hypercompressed recording without any dynamics. Rutan says that he wants to capture the vibe of older recordings – well, older recordings were mastered with dynamics in mind unlike most modern ones. Hypercompression is killing music today.

    • Sam Kang

On a side note, I do know that Rutan doesn’t mastering the recordings himself.

      • Sam Kang

        Fuck, I mean *master

  • BloodLust

HATE’s 2010 album Erebos blows this shit right out of the water.

    • SirJohnPaulDeath

      HATE’s 2010 album Erebos Blows?

      • stretch it over your head like a swim cap

        yeah like your moms

        • SirJohnPaulDeath

Now my feelings are really hurt! I thought my mom made a great album!

  • Metallica Lover 666

    Ew.
