TRIVIUM, STILL CAUGHT UNDER THE “WAVES”

Friday, June 17th, 2011 at 12:40pm by

I really like Trivium, but their latest single, “In Waves,” is just not my cup of tea. That being said, I still feel the need to tip my hat to ‘em, because both the cover art for their new album, also called In Waves, and the video for that song are pretty cool. And I fucking hate everything and everyone, so the fact that I’m saying “Gee, I don’t really like this song but I still think this other stuff is neat” should come across as a glowing recommendation.

Here’s the cover art…

…and you can check out the video, which debuted earlier today on AP, after the jump.

In Waves comes out August 9 on Roadrunner.

Make sure you check out what we have to say about :”In Waves”, Nick Augusto, and the new album!

  • cougar party

Song is mediocre. Cover art is pretty fucking cool. I thought the video was pretty boring; too much slow motion walking. At least they weren’t in a warehouse though.

    • Sam

      my thoughts exactly.

  • meemperor

When he’s screaming “In Waves” I dislike this song. The rest of the song is actually pretty good and I like it.

    • penis breads

don’t you mean “innnnnnnnnn wivvvvvvvvvves” because it doesn’t sound like waves at all.

  • Igottawocket

Gotta agree on the song, not really doing it for me. I thought Shogun was an awesome album, hope this one is too. The video is filmed really well but ultimately felt pretty monotonous after awhile and I lost interest. As for the album cover, wow. Love it. Gonna have to dig around and figure out who did it.

  • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com Alkahest

That has got to be the laziest song they’ve ever done.

    • Zsa Zsa Gabor’s amputated leg used as a dildo and a bludgeon to beat people to death with

It seems very cut and paste.

    • Tim

This sums it up very well.

  • Woopdiedoo

Ok, so when did Trivium go full-blown metalcore ? Because I don’t really like that. Meh.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Wilmot/1177765489 Ian Wilmot

      Ascendancy

      • Military

Yep. They’re trying to do Ascendancy again.

These comments are really nailing it. Right on guys.

  • Andrew

Instead of regressing back to Ascendency why don’t they do something good and, I don’t know, keep expanding and evolving? I thought they were going to after listening to Shogun.

  • RedXIII

Love trivium. This song is pretty good but definitely a bit of a letdown after shogun. Hopefully the rest of the album impresses

  • Colin

still making shit music just thought id look just incase

    • TheHardG

can you do better? if so,get out of the bedroom of your parents house, start a band and conquer the world. Whats that? oh your balls haven’t dropped, well that’s just to bad isn’t it

      • logdeezy

Hey now, this isn’t Youtube. He can express his opinions here without being raged on. The MetalSucks community is better than that… I hope.

  • The_I

This song is growing on me. The guitar solo is pretty disappointing considering their earlier stuff though.

  • Brian R.

i don’t know i don’t really like this band but i dig this song a lot, got a good vibe to it. and that cover is very very cool!!

  • Alex S

This song is bullshit. Compare this with Mastodon’s Hearts Alive and you begin to understand how Trivial this is. Metalcore is dead.

    • Igottawocket

      …what?

    • Military

Trivium is much more than metalcore. Listen to Shogun. Otherwise I agree with you, metalcore is a dying breed. The bands who can’t adapt will perish.

      • Alex S

I own every one of their albums. That’s exactly why this is so weak.

  • Will

I just think they are trying to hard to make themselves a “Black Album”. I know one thing though, this shit sucks…

  • http://crescentshield.com Crescent Shield

I’ve never liked them and now i think i like them even less.

  • Captain Shoggoth

My opinion on this song is the same as it’s been since day one. As a song it’s incredibly catchy and a really fucking good song to listen to. Barring the chugcore parts which are unexpected for Trivium and pretty damn boring, it succeeds as a song.

But musically, technically, it’s ten steps back for the band. The song is interesting as it show’s the band in their comfort zone, I view Shogun as their best record by miles, but this sounds unlike it completely, it sounds like a band who are comfortable what they’re doing. The question is, is this an expression of them being comfortable with what this sound is, or are they too lazy to leave their comfort zone?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Goldwater/33612828 Daniel Goldwater

Very well-said. I can’t even get through this song without skipping ahead.

    • cougar party

      Well put.

  • Jester

The whole djenty thing is a little jarring at first, but this is pretty good none the less.

  • DarkDragon

I knew they wouldnt be able to top Shogun just like Machinehead won’t be able to top the Blackening. As for the metalcore sound, sorry but I’d rather listen to metalcore than re thrash or deathcore.

  • Mitch K.

the song is alright. but the video is incredibly long winded and is about as exciting to watch as lord of the rings was. and about as long.

  • Zsa Zsa Gabor’s amputated leg used as a dildo and a bludgeon to beat people to death with

When Heafy yells “In waves!” it sounds like he is yelling “EWOKS!” and it cracks me up every time.

the only thing i really like about the song is near the end where the chuggas are playing but corey does some broken up chord
its not really great, but its the only part i actually think of when i think of that song

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Ellingsworth/547190713 Jason Ellingsworth

I completely agree with you on this one. The song has grown on me, but none of their previous music had to, so that makes this song not so great. I really hope they pulled their shit together for the rest of the album cause the song and video are lazy and boring.

I really want to see this band make a song and video as epic and disturbing as metallica’s “one” but I fear I will never get to experience that kind of emotion from a music video ever again.

  • CultureVulture

I like Trivium, but I don’t love them. But Shogun headed in a direction I liked the most. I hope they can produce some good songs on their new album.

  • Yeah

This is apparently the slowest and most melodic song on the album…

    According to Corey.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Toy/193302066 Daniel Toy

It better be. I’m not liking it at all. And I’m a huge Trivium fan. There are too many breakdown-ish riffs and metalcore weedely-doos.

  • Rudiger

I like that they are ditching the metallica ripoffs, but this song is kinda weak. That being said I always try to give this band the benefit of the doubt and feel they have the potential to write a great record, even if they dissapoint me nearly every time

  • Logan

I like it, no other commennt

    • Betelgeuse

      Shit, no other comment.

  • KellerWVU

Hope this is the weakest track on the album. Shogun had them goin in the right direction. Please don’t go backwards Trivium.

  • Fufkin

A rubbish comeback song – if this is indeed the weakest song on the album, what were they thinking?

After the good work of Shogun, the general consensus is that this is an important album for them, but even in the context of an album this song is the kind of filler that I thought they’d moved past. Still, there’s always the other songs.

  • tom

anyone else think heafy looks like the T-1000 in this video?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rui-Santos/637881346 Rui Santos

I like the melody of the song and the fact that Trivium is going in other direction.
The In Waves scream is too much, i can agree. He could just scream that in the begginning and in the end, would make it less annoying and the structure and idea of the song would still be there.
    JUST SAYING.
    Regards.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Gajewski/1184209959 Alex Gajewski

ok is it just me or does the album cover look like angel island from sonic 3?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Geoffrey-Hays/100001712105502 Geoffrey Hays

shogun and the crusade had really good guitars but those albums did not feel like trivium i hated the metallic approach. this song is ok but its nothing like a Ascendancy not enough heart in the song.

and the music video was totally boring they didn’t even pick up there instruments.

  • Fred Durst

I liked Shogun a lot, one of the few metalcore albums I enjoy, but this is boring garbage. chug-chug-chug EGGGGG WHIIIIIIIITEEEESSSS!!!!! *Generic emo clean chorus*

    • luvthevag

      hahaha.

  • stretch it over your head like a swim cap

    Sucks.
