ROCK OUT WITH YER COCK OUT: BIG COCK AND VILLAINS OF VAUDEVILLE BRING THE L.A. SLEAZE

Villains of VaudevilleIf you’re fixin’ for some ’80s-style sleazy hard rock (and really, when are we not?), you best check out two relatively new bands with some familiar faces, Big Cock and Villains of Vaudeville. If the prospect of bands featuring ex and current members of Lynch Mob, Keel, Lizzy Borden, and Beautiful Creatures appeals to you, click through for more after the jump.

Miraculously it’s taken until 2007 for there to be a band named Big Cock, but thankfully there is finally got someone to deliver the rock, hard. Big Cock features vocalist Robert Mason (Lynch Mob, Cry of Love) and Dave Henzerling (a.k.a. David Michael-Philips – King Kobra, Keel, Lizzy Borden), and delivers a healthy mix of ’70s hard rock influences and blues riffage; the lyrical topics are exactly what you’d expect from a band with this name, with songs such as “Rock Hard,” “King of Cool,” “Real Man,” and “Ride on Me” available on the band’s MySpace.

Villains of Vaudeville lean more ’80s or even ’90s L.A. metal; I was about to comment that the vocalist reminded me of ex-Bang Tango / Beautiful Creatures singer Joe LeSte, and then I looked and saw that the singer is none other than Beautiful Creatures bassist Kenny Kweens. And here here, the two tracks on the band’s MySpace were mixed by our favorite L.A. strip scenester Anthony Focx! This shit rocks HARD, certainly as heavy or heavier than anything the Creatures ever did. The riffage is deep and dirty, heavy but hooky, with a groove not often present in this kind of music. The Creatures music had this groove too, and I’m wondering if it’s not the product of a bass player penning the tunes. Kweens’ vocals are, and I quote from the band’s MySpace, “more like gargling with gasoline” than singing. But whatever it is, I like it; fuckin’ dirty L.A. rock. Good work, Kenny.
