SH*T THAT COMES OUT TODAY: FEBRUARY 21, 2012

It’s a slow week for new metal, so hey you’ll have time to check out all the great February STCOT action you missed, eh?

Sorrow And Extinction (Profound Lore)
On a playlist with: Indian, Burning Witch, The Obsessed
Listen “An Offering Of Grief” (here)

This Little Rock band’s debut album matches sludgy doom riffage and shimmery dual guitar leads to raw, zombie-march drums. Sorrow is comparable to Pilgrim’s new album from last week, just a little more drawn out. Stellar debut. So far, 2012 is the year of doom metal. Double V Approved

Cognitive (Spinefarm)
On a playlist with: Tool, Opeth, Giant Squid
Listen Cognitive album stream (here)

There’s no way this band won’t be compared to Tool: Singer Joel Eklof (ex-Willowtree) is very reminiscent of Tool’s Maynard Keenan when subdued, and that’s his main style. Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth, ex-Amon Amarth) and Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, Death) propel a controlled, proggy sound that just makes you think of Tool. Regardless, Cognitive is nice mid-tempo melodic rock. Double V Approved
