SH*T THAT COMES OUT TODAY: MAY 8, 2012

Bible Of The Devil
For The Love Of Thugs And Fools (Cruz Del Sur)
On a playlist with: Armored Saint, Fireball Ministry, Molly Hatchet
Listen “Sexual Overture/While You Were Away” and “The Parcher” (here)

Chicago’s Bible of the Devil delivers rocking jams with great riffage and tasty solos. Like ZZ Top mixed with High On Fire, the band’s sixth record sits comfortably among their others – not better, not worse – and that is just fine. 2008’s Freedom Metal (their last record) brought the band to a larger platform, including this release, which is released on Italian label Cruz Del Sur. That’s just fine too!

SH*T THAT COMES OUT TODAY: MAY 8, 2012Cattle Decapitation
Monolith Of Inhumanity (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Skinless, Anata, Napalm Death
Listen MetalSucks Exclusive Monolith Of Inhumanity full stream (here)

What do you expect from a band called Cattle Decapitation? A no-frills death metal attack. And everything on Monolith Of Inhumanity — beats, solos, bass riffs, literally everything — travels at 100 miles per hour and only breaks for an instant before launching into the next section. Cattle Decap always rips, and Monolith is another solid release.

SH*T THAT COMES OUT TODAY: MAY 8, 2012Horseback
Half Blood (Relapse)
On a playlist with: The Devil’s Blood, Neurosis, Tia Carrera
Listen “Ahriman” (here)

In metal, subgenres abound to the point that it’s (near) impossible for a band to not touch on several different ones on any given album. No surprise there. But Horseback thrills via classic-rock boogie riffs and organs beneath black metal vocals. The combination first seems scattered and awkward, but Horseback wins in a big way.

Hung - HungHung
Hung (ReThink/The End)
On a playlist with: Opeth, Agalloch, Katatonia
Listen MetalSucks Exclusive Hung full stream (here)

MetalSucks is pro-Hung: The progressive death metallers appeared on our NYC Sucks compilation last year and yep we’re the exclusive home of this very album’s stream. Probably because Hung is an awesome band that mixes death metal growls, riffs, and pounding grooves with unusual but metal-friendly violins and whistles. The result: a powerful, brutal and beautiful collection.

SH*T THAT COMES OUT TODAY: MAY 8, 2012Moonspell
Alpha Noir/Omega White (Napalm)
On a playlist with: At The Gates, 69 Eyes, Tiamat
Listen “Lickanthrope” (here)

Portugal’s Moonspell has refined their style several times, but Alpha Noir may be some of their best work. Melodic death metal with symphonics, keyboards, and serene choruses, Alpha Noir also dares to be paired with Omega White, a bonus CD with eight tracks rooted in gothic and symphonic metal. Ready to argue about which Moonspell mode is superior?

SH*T THAT COMES OUT TODAY: MAY 8, 2012Storm Corrosion
Storm Corrosion (Roadrunner)
On a playlist with: Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Astra
Listen “Drag Ropes” (here)

Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt and Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson first worked together when Wilson produced Opeth’s Blackwater Park. Perhaps that record served as only a hint of what this pair could conjure, and Storm Corrosion is the full reveal. Lead track “Drag Ropes” is an exercise in futility, as it spends ten minutes crescendoing to nowhere. But duh we expect the unexpected from these brainiacs.
