Nunslaughter The Devil's Congeries Vol. 1

We could all admire comic Louis CK, who last year released a stand-up special directly to fans for the low, low price of $5. For this particular video, there were no big manufacturers and distributors driving up its retail price, so the shit was so cheap that purchasing it required zero deliberation. That is, the 70-minute yukfest costs less than a sandwich and can be downloaded in a snap — so even if only mildly good, it’s worth the price. Low risk, low effort. That’s good salesing.

The opposite of CK’s experiment — which he says grossed $500,000 in 72 hours — is a product that for most people requires a lot of chasing around to find and contains s0 little content that its price is rarely low enough. Like, oh for example, when a cool band releases a bunch of splits, 7″ EPs, and other limited little releases. Most can’t excite u enough to spur a trip to the hip part of town where the dork record shops are. Plus when u get all the shit home, u are leashed to your stereo, flipping records every two minutes like a weirdo. I got caught up in that shit for exactly a week in college.

But now it’s a regular thing for me to cheer with gratitude when a band like Envy or Nunslaughter collects all that scattered shit in one place. In Nunslaughter’s case, it’s The Devil’s Congeries Vol. 1 (out July 23). Its first disc is 7″ releases 1990-1997 and its second collects their “Hell On” live EPs 2001-2004. That’s a huge pile of awesome scum without all the shagging of obscure vinyls. Of course the fuckers just released a new split with Antiseen so I guess we can expect The Devil’s Congeries Vol. 2 lol
