You Will Never Believe Why Overkill’s Bobby Blitz Thought He Only Had Six Months to Live

So, just try to imagine this: you’re in a foreign country, the native language of which is different from your own, and you get sick. You go to the local hospital seeking help… and that’s where the doctor breaks the bad news: you’ve only got six months to live. You would, rather understandably, probably freak out, but once you mind stopped reeling (or at least slowed its reel down), you’d begin to think about getting your affairs in order so that your loved ones are taken care of when you’re gone. Somewhere in there, I suspect, you’d also begin to feel really, really depressed and/or scared.

Not, just try to imagine this: all of that happens… and then twelve hours later someone who is better able to communicate with you tells you there’s been a misunderstanding due to the language barrier, and you’re basically fine.

You fucking head would explode, wouldn’t it???

Well, hey, guess what? That very thing happened to Overkill vocalist Bobby Blitz! Mr. Blitz shared the story during a recent interview with Rocksverige:

“I cancelled a show in Hamburg and ended up in the hospital with borderline pneumonia and all this shit. I remember sitting in the German hospital, trying to recover from this and this guy came in and told me I had six months! I sat up all night and remember going through my computer, ‘Who do I owe money to?, Who owes me?’ My wife was on vacation and I didn´t wanna ruin her vacation with it, but it was a fucking awful 12 hours. I wasn´t really expecting that and I never expected it to come as news to me in broken English. In any case, the next day the woman who was in charge came in and said ‘What are you talking about? No, you have to change your habits or in 6 months you´ll be in another hospital again’ and I was like ‘Fuck!’”

“Fuck!” actually seems to be a very mildly reaction to a scare of this magnitude, but there is a silver lining (besides the fact that Blitz isn’t terminally ill, I mean): the experience inspired the lyrics to the Overkill song “Another Day to Die,” which Blitz wrote during that twelve-hour period when he thought he was doomed. Little wonder the song is one of the most visceral on the band’s new album, White Devil Armory.

White Devil Armory is out now on eOne. Overkill’s next tour of Germany isn’t scheduled yet, but sources tell me their rider will most surely include a ton of echinacea and ibuprofen.
