Here Comes the Sunn 0)))

Earlier this year, we heard a sample of some new Sunn 0))) that sounded like, well, Sunn0))) — droning, rattling, dark. Many a doom fan hoped this post was heralding a new album by the band, and lo and behold, they were right.

According to Metal Insider, Sunn 0))) will release Kannon via Southern Lord on December 4th of this year. The album will be made up of “three pieces of a triadic whole: ‘Kannon 1, 2 and 3,’” and according to press materials will be the “most outright ‘metal’” record the band has done in years. Attila Csihar and more will contribute.

The band’s new bio describes the album, which will apparently have a Buddhist bent, as such:

Kannon is also very close to the cyclical character of mantra which the band has evolved into as a living creature, the enormity of intense sensate detail and manifestation of the live in concert element of Sunn 0))), the organism that has flourished, metamorphosed and transcended tremendously over the past ten years. The literal representation of Kannon is as an aspect of Buddha: specifically “goddess of mercy” or “Perceiving the Sounds (or Cries) of the World.” She is also sometimes commonly known as the Guanyin Bodhisattva (Chinese: 觀音菩薩) amongst a plurality of other forms. There is a rich lineage behind this idea tracing back through many Asian belief systems, with as many names and cultural personifications of the idea.

There you go.

Given that it’s a Sunn 0))) record coming out on Southern Lord, one assumes that it will reliably sound like the band’s previous material, at least to a certain degree, so drone-doom fans should gear up to have their fillings rattled out this winter.
