Hammers of Misfortune are “Flying Alone” as the Kings of Unpretentious Prog Metal

Hammers of Misfortune - Dead RevolutionHammers of Misfortune are about as unpretentious as prog metal outfits come. Nothing about the San Francisco outfit is sexy or in line with current metal trends: the band is made up of middle-aged Bay Area scene vets, it’s been five years since their last album, they hardly tour, they don’t play a million notes a minute and they most certainly do not djent. They just play good old fashioned — but not self-referentially retro — prog metal that’s from the heart, with a touch of psych, expertly composed and beautifully presented.

Take a listen to new song “Flying Alone” which premiered today over at Invisible Oranges. Great riffs, soaring vocals, hummable melodies, a searing guitar solo. And you know what else? A hard-driving beat, courtesy of Death Angel drummer Will Carroll, new in the band for Dead Revolution. It’s a perfect prog number through and through.

Check it out below, as well as another new song called “Sea of Heroes,” previously premiered at Stereogum. Dead Revolution comes out on July 22nd via Metal Blade and can be pre-ordered here.
