Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to Shit That Comes Out Today, your Satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we usually stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage!

HoresebackHorseback
Dead Ringers (Relapse)
On a playlist with: Sunn O))), Locrian, Circle
Listen Dead Ringers full stream (here)

Jam-tech, rhythmic pulsing, dark forms, anomalous noises: these and more consummate Horseback as, like, the greatest. Dead Ringers is one of those metal-in-spirit non-metal albums. A celebration of diversity, experimentation, and the extremes of intensity. This is a one-man project, the album art is totally sick, and you can enjoy this high or low. Music, when peeled like an onion, exposes a heart (core); therein lies Dead Ringers, plus the tears too.

·

Helion PrimeHelion Prime
Helion Prime (DiveBomb)
On a playlist with: Gamma Ray, DragonForce, Babymetal
Listen Helion Prime full stream (here)

Sound the fucking alarms, the armored Tyrannosaurus w/ robot pincher arms attacks! And so it was: power metal is back, baby! All it took was a massage: old tropes feed like monsters in this subgenre: rub ’em out. It’s not about honoring the classics, about satisfying an existing need. Helion Prime is the album you never expected to need. You like it against all expectations. Plus it’s sci-fi as fuck, and there are rad guitar solos.

Thy_Art_Is_Murder The_Acacia_Strain_depression_sessionsThy Art Is Murder/The Acacia Strain/Fit For An Autopsy
The Depression Sessions (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with: Oceano, Vanna, The Red Chord
Watch “They Will Know One Another” (here)

These three deathcore beasts may do well alone, but what about collectively? What would happen if they pooled their breakdown skills? Touched magical rings in a triangle shape? Touched tips? The answer is not promising. Cringe-worthy lyrics are involved. It is heavy though, like really heavy, like if all you want is weight and sensation then, well, here ya have it!

·

Spirit AdriftSpirit Adrift
Chained To Oblivion (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: Monolord, Ufomammut, Neurosis
Listen Chained To Oblivion full stream (here)

Chained To Oblivion is right-good long-form doom metal with passionate singing. It also features dynamic songwriting and minimal reliance on recycled groove riffs. Also occluded is the entire stoner ethos, which seems in excess to spoil things, mono-focused. That, Spirit Adrift floats toward what could be considered post-doom, meaning essentially the idea’s there but not its full representation.

·

MizmorMizmor
Yodh (Gilead)
On a playlist with: False, Pale Chalice, Lycus
Listen “Woe Regains My Substance” (here)

Sick and intellectual, Yodh is cream-of-the-crop for Gilead. Performing their first live show this weekend at Migration Festival in Olympia, Mizmor creates walls of scar-tissue noise over lengthy, complex tracks. They span doom metal and black metal, especially black metal, underneath a spirit of horror and the sick human condition! Featuring album art by Zdzisław Beksiński, the real tone settles perfectly.

·

Gilded LilyGilded Lily
Mongrel’s Light (Lion’s Jawbone)
On a playlist with: Minus, Converge, Darkthrone
Listen Mongrel’s Light full stream (here)

Do you recall the first scene of that movie Out Of The Furnace? In it, a bystander intervenes when the villainous Woody Harrelson menaces and abuses his date at a drive-in movie. Harrelson exits his car and approaches the good samaritan; the body language of each indicates that negotiations are still in progress and neither is committed to violence. But it’s a trick — Harrelson’s character lands a brutal sucker punch and then goes to work ensuring its recipient will require reconstructive surgery and a tube to breathe. You’ve been warned about Mongrel’s Light.
