Doom Metal Veterans The Obsessed Debut Sort-of New Song “Sodden Jackal”

0

The Obsessed have released their first single in over 20 years. It’s a re-recorded version of an old ’80s demo track, but damn, does it sound good!

The song is called “Sodden Jackal,” and if you’ve ever listened to the original bootleg/demo recording, then you know firsthand how much cleaner this re-release sounds. With the track’s new production values it sounds like it could’ve been a part of their last album, The Church Within, which came out back in ’94. It’s slow, features prominent vocals, and has a classic sound to it that cements the material as a product of its time. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. If anything it’s a welcome addition to the scene.

The song debuted as part of Adult Swim Singles, a successful series of samplers that the cult television channel began putting out a few years ago. It’s good to see industry vets like The Obsessed getting exposure through this method; it’s not all just up-and-comers and popular modern acts.

In addition to the new track, it looks like The Obsessed have a new album coming out this spring via Relapse. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the details as they emerge. In the meantime enjoy “Sodden Jackal” below. I included the original demo as well in case you want a frame of reference.
