Watch: Metallica Guitarists Perform “The Star Spangled Banner” Before San Francisco Giants Game

Fuck, the Dodgers are beyond ridiculous this year, aren’t they? They’ve won 44 out of their last 51 games, a winning percentage of .863. I’ve never heard of anything like it. Insane. Their 79.32 overall record is league best, by far… no one’s even close. Whoever matches up with L.A. in the playoffs is going to have a hell of a time getting past them.

In contrast, my Mets — who the Dodgers mercilessly beat up this past weekend — are already looking towards 2018, currently sitting at 11 games under .500 for the first time since 2014, their season jettisoned early by endless injuries and underwhelming performance. The starting pitching — supposedly the team’s strength — has been its biggest weakness; the promising quintet of Syndergaard deGrom, Harvey, Matz and Wheeler still hasn’t taken a full turn in the rotation together. Michael Conforto has been a bright spot, and it’ll be fun to watch young gun SS Amed Rosario play out the year with his buddy Dominic Smith once the latter joins the big league club, which should be any day now. Otherwise, it’ll be yet another mostly meaningless September. Sigh.

Things aren’t much better in San Francisco, where fans of the cellar-dwelling Giants were no doubt happy for something — anything — to district from shitty baseball at the ballpark. That came in the form of Metallica’s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the team’s fifth annual Metallica Night last night, August 7th, where Metallica’s guitar duo did a fine rendition of our national anthem. The high was short lived, though: the home team lost to the visiting Chicago Cubs by a score of 5-3.

Watch Papa Het and Kaptain Kirk wail it out below. Hammett performed a solo version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch as well.

At least there’s always next year.
