Turnstile Release New Song “Generator” and Announce New Album Time & Space

Turnstile - Time & SpaceLast month Turnstile released a song called “Real Thing” and teased a new album to be announced soon, their first since 2015’s Nonstop Feeling (with the Move Thru Me EP in between) and their debut effort for mega metal label Roadrunner Records.

Today we’ve got a double whammy of Turnstile updates: another new song, “Generator,” and a name and release date for the new album, Time & Space, out February 23rd.

“Generator” makes its premiere via NPR and you can check it out below. It starts out with a hella promising riff, summoning the ’90s inspired noise rock grooves that made Nonstop Feeling so special, before transitioning into a thrashy, upbeat verse. But then it kinda falls off the rails a bit; there’s a Jane’s Addiction-y atmospheric, instrumental break followed by what I guess could be called an outro (with a nifty enough guitar solo), both of which are all well and good… but no chorus! Where’s the hook? I need the hook! Lord knows I’m not averse to non-standard song structures — I was raised on friggin Dream Theater — but that’s not really I want from Turnstile — I want some fucking sing-along-able JAMS, dude. At the very least they could’ve brought that sick riff from the intro back again; it’s the best part of the entire song.

As such, I remain lukewarm on what I’ve heard so far from Time & Space. But, as always, I’m open to being convinced otherwise by subsequent singles. Bring it!
