Parents Charged with Child Abandonment After Leaving 11-Year-Old Alone to Go See Godflesh
As anyone with children will tell you, going out at night can become something of an ordeal. MetalGF and I often go out separately in large part because of the hassle and great expense of getting a babysitter. Whenever we do go to a show or out to dinner and drinks for a friend’s birthday it’ll set us back close to $100 not even including the cost of whatever it is we’re going out to do!
One Texas couple decided to say “fuck it,” allegedly leaving their 11-year-old daughter at home alone for two nights while they jetted off to Detroit to see Godflesh’s August 23rd concert. According to the Detroit Metro Times, the girl’s mother had asked her sister (the child’s aunt) to check on her while they were away, but the child claims she was not provided that information. The child’s great aunt ended up alerting local authorities that the girl had been home alone, and when deputies arrived they found the girl attempting to cook for herself on the stove. Police had tried unsuccessfully to reach the girl’s parents for several hours, and when the parents were finally contacted they initially lied and said they were in Louisiana.
John Guerrero, 48, and Virginia Yearnd, 39, of Spring, Texas could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
