Meet Justin Broadrick’s Latest Project: Zonal

  • Axl Rosenberg

Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu, JK Flesh, ex-Napalm Death, etc.) is one of those dudes who always has so many balls in the air that it’s hard to keep track of ’em all. But apparently at some point he began a collaboration with Kevin Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) call Techno Animal, and at some point Techno Animal morphed into Zonal (which is a much better name), and now Zonal have announced that they’ll release their Relapse Records debut, Wrecked, in the fall.

Meet Justin Broadrick’s Latest Project: Zonal

Broadrick oscillates freely between metal and non-metal projects; Zonal sits squarely in the latter category, offering up a mix of atmospheric electronica, dub, and hip-hop. The first single, “System Error,” which features Moor Mother, is dark, edgy, and cinematic, kinda like a somewhat less commercial Massive Attack. And it’s totally worth your time, even you’re bummed it’s not Godflesh-y.

Incidentally, it also contains the phrase “Elephant dick on ya head,” and that alone should be enough to make you wanna listen.

Check out “System Error” below. Wrecked comes out October 24. Pre-order it here.
