“Wolves at the Door,” the first single from Yngwie Malmsteen’s forthcoming album Parabellum, didn’t do much for me.

Having said that, Malmsteen’s new single from that album, “Relentless Fury,” is pretty goddamn great — and not just because it’s impossible to hear the words “Yngwie” and “fury” and not think of the guitar virtuoso’s infamous airplane rant. This song is just hella-catchy, which makes Yngwie’s guitar pyrotechnics a lot more fun — you’re enjoying the song, not just being like, “Yup, this dude can still shred.” I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s still like seven minutes of shredding in the five minute song — but that’s not the only interesting thing about it.

Says Malmsteen of the track:

“Here’s ‘Relentless Fury’. It’s a good example of how you can take a simple groove and melody, and take it to a whole new world with different harmonies, instrumentation, and voices. Hope you guys enjoy it.”

Parabellum is out July 23 via Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group. Pre-order it here.
