Watch: Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz Shows You Five Vocal Exercises You Can Do At Your Desk

Everyone thinks they could be a death metal vocalist until it’s time to be a death metal vocalist. What we all assume is a bunch of yelling and zombie growls usually involves using one’s body in a very specific way that could easily rip a vocalist’s throat to shreds if they’re not careful. More so, finding the time and the energy to shape one’s vocal performance into a thing of sonic ugliness is tough, especially if you have coworkers who don’t appreciate the nuances of Like an Ever Flowing Stream. Thankfully, Alissa White-Gluz, vocalist for Swedish melodeath planet-conquerors Arch Enemy, has graced us with a video in which she outlines five vocal exercises that you can do every day at your desk.

In an exclusive video for MetalSucks, Alissa shows off five exercises that the average vocalist can do while going about their day-to-day lives. Here’s one of the things that Alissa suggests:

“Your voice is an instrument like any other, and requires maintenance and regular check-ins. So first, what I like to do every morning when I wake up, is I start off with one of the easiest and most gentle vocal exercises, and that is a hum on an ‘NG’ sound. It’s an ‘NG’ sound as in the word ‘sing’ — so, that last sound that you make, with ‘NG,’ actually raises the soft palate and allows you to kind of access that part of your voice that you really want to be tuned into when singing. So, at your desk, or on the bus, or whatever you gotta do, you can always just sit there, choose a note that’s pretty similar to the note that you speak on…and just hum an ‘NG’ on that.”
