Exclusive: The Callous Daoboys are the Most Frenzied Church Band in Their Video for “The Elephant Man in the Room”
When I was first approached to premiere The Callous Daoboys’ new single and music video for “The Elephant Man in the Room,” I was skeptical of how the band’s sound was described. Mike Patton‘s name was invoked and it was suggested that the band was “derived from the school of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, and The Chariot” but had “melodic methods to their madness.”
Lofty comparisons like “Dillinger by way of Mr. Bungle” usually do nothing but make me think one thing: “buuuullshit.”
But you know what? I’m eating my words today, because the song you’re about to hear off of their fourth studio effort Celebrity Therapist easily pulls from those influences, plunges what they’ve extracted into a broken centrifuge, and force feeds you the twisted concoction they’ve created. If you like metalcore but think the genre needs better hooks and a violin, then you’ve found your new band.
Hailing from Georgia, this seven-piece outfit hits like a train. As with most metalcore bands, they traffic in dissonant, staccato guitar jabs and pummeling rhythms that follow an intricate time signature. They demand your attention and will get it if they have to kick down the door in the process. And then all of a sudden, it’s groovy. There’s bounce in the rhythm before it’s back to square one and you’re tumbling down the frenetic rabbit hole with them again.
Theirs is the kind of music that’s immediately recognized for what it is, but is often hard to explain to anyone that’s never listened to mathcore, metalcore, or post-hardcore before. Undaunted, vocalist Carson Pace at least takes a crack at it.
“The Elephant Man In The Room,” is this a third cryptic press release? Nah man, this one is just straight over the plate rock music. The kind you find in your dad’s tape deck. Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, that kinda deal. Hope this song makes it into Stranger Things so our parents will think we’re a real band.”
So take a few minutes, sit down, and watch the music video below. Embrace the calculated chaos of “The Elephant Man in the Room” by The Callous Daoboys.
The Callous Daoboys’ new album Celebrity Therapist will be available on September 2 and is currently available for preorder via MNRK Heavy and Modern Static Records.
