Album Stream: Experience Thotcrime’s Digitally Brutal, Frenetic Energy in D1G1T4L_DR1FT

It may be less than 25 minutes of sound, but Thotcrime’s D1G1T4L_DR1FT is a memorable melding of heavy, yet punchy guitar work, thundering drum work, and the type of digitally dystopic sound that could only be made by a mad scientist standing behind an array of synths and computers. That’s what you’re about to experience in this special album stream.

And while it’s easy to get lost in the technical soundscapes that Thotcrime created, the lyrics and themes deal with very human emotions and experiences. Guitarist Malady Jane explains that juxtaposition was by design.

“To me, D1G1T4L_DR1FT is an album about triumph over adversity, persevering out of spite and overcoming. The lyrics often dwell on difficult topics – mental illness, loss, etc – but there are notes of hope throughout, and the album ends on a triumphant note with “I Couldn’t End Me, So I’d Like To See You Try.”

“At one point during the process of making the album this quote from an old Tumblr post came up – “You can’t kill me in a way that matters” – and I think that exemplifies the overall feeling of the record. Musically, the album takes some of the many sounds we’ve experimented with over the past year and a half and brings them together into a cohesive unit. As with Onyourcomputer, collaborations are a big part of the record, and we’re grateful to Aki, Diana, Carson, and Katie for lending their voices. It wouldn’t be the same record without them.

“We began working on this album not long after releasing our last album, Onyourcomputer, so it feels incredibly gratifying to finally be able to share what we created.”

Along with the album’s release tomorrow via Prosthetic Records, Thotcrime have planned a number of events to celebrate the band’s latest effort.

“We have quite a few events planned this weekend to celebrate – a Discord listening party at 12:00 AM (EST) the night of the full release, as well as shows on Saturday the 29th in Milwaukee, WI and Sunday the 30th in Philadelphia for our official album release show. Hope to see you there!”

You can easily join the Discord listening party ahead of time right now, as well as buy tickets to those album release shows. D1G1T4L_DR1FT will be available tomorrow via Prosthetic Records.
