Baroness’ Latest Single “Beneath The Rose” is a Trippy Trip Through Riff City

If there’s one thing you can say about Baroness, it’s that they’re willing to take risks and experiment with their sound. Each album is a reflection of where the band is at that time in the members’ lives and careers, giving the final product a chance to grow into what it needs to be. Such was apparently the case with the band’s new single, “Beneath The Rose.”

According to frontman John Baizley, this latest release actually stems from the band’s Gold & Grey sessions. Though it didn’t make the cut for that release, it took on a new life while the band was putting STONE together, letting it grow and evolve into something new.

“It feels great to be releasing music again. Especially a song like ‘Beneath The Rose,’ which we began writing during the Gold & Grey sessions almost six years ago. During those sessions, the song never quite took off but once we began writing STONE, one of the first things I did was pull that main guitar riff out of retirement to see if we could breathe new life into the bones of this song. Paired with ‘Last Word,’ ‘Beneath the Rose’ became a microcosmic expression of STONE, a kind of mission statement that hints at the wide musical territory we cover throughout the rest of the album. It’s also part one of a trilogy of songs that also includes ‘Choir’ and ‘The Dirge.’”

That last part about it being part of a trilogy of songs is particularly interesting. Given the song’s placement in the track list, it seems like “Beneath The Rose” is the jumping off point for that trilogy. Where does a song like this go from here?! Can’t wait to find out.

Baroness’ Stone is due for release on September 15 via Abraxan Hymns, but you can preorder it right now. They’re also scheduled to go on a big ass tour, which you can also check out below.
