Watch Metallica Debut “Too Far Gone?” Over the Weekend in East Rutherford
As the world’s biggest metal band kicked off their latest North America run in East Rutherford, the New York/New Jersey area was pretty much Metallica central. If you were a metalhead in the tri-state area, you were certain to know at least a few people heading up to MetLife Stadium (it’ll always be Giants Stadium to me) for two nights of heavy metal.
While the first night featured the admittedly pretty cool (albeit old man-centric) combination of Metallica and Pantera, and the second night saw the return of Five Finger Death Punch to the tour lineup, people are collectively taking note of Metallica’s live debut of the 72 Seasons track “Too Far Gone.” Of Metallica’s extensive catalog, only a couple dozen tracks have never been played live, so whenever they decide to drop a new one on 80,000+ people, it’s kind of a big deal.
As you can hear in the clips below, the band sounds tight. Which is to be expected, yet again, because you don’t become the biggest metal band on the planet without being technically proficient — 2023 Lars Ulrich be damned.
The M72 World Tour will continue to soldier on later this week when the band heads to the Stade Olympique in Montreal this Friday and Sunday. As with the rest of their tour, the two dates will have completely different Metallica setlists, so who knows if they’ll knock a few more live debuts out before their run is finished.
